because everyone knows that big box office is a clear indicator of quality, and all those serious critics opinions are worthless
Box office returns indicate quantity, not quality. And that quantity is in relation to the number of ticket sales. Clearly based on the box office returns of the movies, there is a large interest in the films, with a large number of people going to see the film, often times more than once. Although it might not indicate quality, the numbers the ticket sales represent would indicate that the movie going masses generally are supporting this film for what they perceive as a "good" film. One need only to look at the user generated reviews/ratings of the films to see that the general consensus among those users is an approval of the films. So, the box office sales and users ratings taken into account would indicate an audience that generally approves of the product they are paying for.
Those critic opinions aren't worth any more compared to any other opinion. Roger Ebert is one man, with an opinion. Just like every other person that watches a movie. Having a column and being a professional critic doesn't make his opinion any more valid than someone elses. If someone's opinion differs with even a critic's, that's their right, and their opinion is just as valid as anyones.
ON-TOPIC: I think his biggest mistake was with the level of humor present in the films. I didn't find any of it to be that bad, but I could've just as easily gone without it. I also would've liked to see more character out of some of the lesser characters in ROTF. Sideswipe was beyond cool in the opening scene. Then became a background character
