The roads are more dangerous now!

Postby Moonlight » Wed Nov 21, 2007 11:40 am

My son turned 15 in July. He had to wait to get his permit until his grades were up. Well they are up and he is with his dad getting a drivers permit. Jack of course it doing the happy dance
He has a Ford Ranger now but he plans on getting a job so we are going to give him the Buick and get us a SUV. Jack said eeewww I dont want to drive the Buick that is a granny car. I told him that when he got his permit he did not want to drive home since his dad is driving him up there in the Buick. Total change of heart never mind he says the Buick is a sweet car.

Never fear. There's a gentle curve up a head that'll get rid of them. [\stolen simpsons ref]

The joke in the title would be a lot funnier if it weren't used every time someone got a learner's permit.

Personally, I wouldn't give him a car, period. I'd make him get a job and buy it himself. That's how my parents taught me, their parents taught them, and so on down the line. Not to mention that if he doesn't have a job, YOU'LL be the ones to pay for insurance, and insurance for a first-time driver is a large number.

hmmm....my parents handed me a car that was in the family since 1982. I tolerated the car but it was ok to drive. I had to drive it differently than I would a normal car because it was a diesel.

LOL that line is an old one huh! I think my mom used that one when I started driving  I had to ride with him today. It would have been ok if he could keep the car in a straight line.
Oh a good one is that we were out and about getting last minute thanksgiving supplies when my dearest husband started talking that a mustang would be nice to have. I wonder how many times he will flip flop before he finally buys something?
We thought about Jack buying his own car but we decided on making him pay all his own insurance and gas. That in itself will cost a pretty penny. He also needs to maintain good grades and have a job even if it is part time just a couple days a week.

Depending on the area getting a job without a license is hard as hell.

Take me for example, I live in the middle of nowhere.

There is no where within walking distance to get a job and my dad and stepmom refused to give me a ride anywhere.

I got a car from my grandparents that was my great great aunt's car.

An 82 Skylark, it hardly runs, but now I have a job and can pay the insurance now that I have a way to work.

Not every kid is blessed with having access to job opportunities

It's called "Working for it." It's a great lesson to teach a kid.

There are much worse ways to learn what working for it means, trust me.

I don't know if you meant to support my point, if something was lost or replaced in a semantics mishaps.

But thanks for supporting my point. :D

Oh I agree that kids need to learn how to work for something.

I just don't think the whole automobile thing is as black and white as everyone thinks it is.

We also live out in the middle of nowhere. I have 2 other neighbors here but other then that we have cows around here. The nearest place to get a job is about 40 min away. The tiny town we live close to has a couple of jobs but they are really a last resort, besides we live far enough out that we have to drive into town.

So.....you are GIVING him a car, and he complains about it? Damn. Regardless of what type of car it is, doesn't he realize you just gave him at least a couple of grand worth of metal? Tell him if he doesn't like it, he can walk the 40 miles to work.

16 year olds WILL get into a wreck. That is almost a 99% garuantee. Better him wreck a piece of **** than something new bought for him.

....and make him pay for his own insurance.
