I think I already know the answer, but here goes anyway. I know Seibertron is officially against site that let you download pirated content. But what about ones that only let you watch it, not download it. Sites like youtube and stuff. What is Seibertron.coms stance on free streaming video sites?

The reason I ask is b/c I just started watching Robotech on this site which I won't name(and DON'T PM me about), unless the powers at be say it's OK. And they only have up to episode 16 and then the next one is like episode 36 and on. So I'll be missing out on half a season. I've tried similar sites with no luck. I could theoretically buy the DVDs, but I'm such a Robotech newb I wouldn't know what the best set to get would be. I'd wanna buy the entire original series. I know there are other Robotech series and movie too, but I don't know where they all fit.

So here's the dilema: Do I do the "moral" thing and go out and buy the DVDs to a show I'll probably only watch once or twice, as well as risk getting the wrong ones or missing ones? Or do I go the piracy route and look for a way to watch them for free?

Piracy is muddy subject. On 1 hand it's stealing. On the other it's bringing media to the masses who may never see it otherwise. I've seen some great anime shows that you'ld find on TV. Then again I've also watched some new crappy Hollywood movies that I wouldn't spend a dime to see in the theater. Is it immoral? Or is it fighting the system?

Feel free to turn this into a discussion on that. So the quick break down is:
1. Seibertron.com's stance on websites that freely distribute commercially created content.
2. What Robotech DVDs(and hey lets include toys for the hell of it) should someone new to the series buy?
3.Your personally stance on piracy.
I could have made 3 seperate topics, but with yours truly you get 3 for the price of 1.

I'm all about Youtube if I don't have the cash to throw at something that's gonna be expensive. The only pirated movies I have are the ones my husband brought back from Iraq and ones I accidentally purchased at a yard sale. I don't really do pirated, personally.

For a movie I really want, I just get the DVD.

They used to run it on Cartoon Network. At least the Macross Saga and Southern Cross.
Order of the series Robotech Macross Saga then Southern Cross saga then Invid Invasion.
If you buy it youll probably watch it a lot more than just once or twice. Heck my husbands grandmother watched it religiously. They do sell it in collections of entire seasons.
Or you could go out and buy the books by Jack McKinney. They rock too btw.

Here's what you do:

Screw Robotech.

Get a netflix account. I'm sure you know someone who can hook you up with a free trial. Ask around. They're everywhere.

Then rent the Macross DVD's. They're in English and the story is the same with better acting, no censorship (that's right, naked Minmay), and the songs are way, way better.

As for the other two seasons, you could get Robotech for those, I guess. The story of the first season of Robotech is so similar to Macross that you could start in on the second season of Robotech with no problems. The Robotech Masters = the guys who made the Zentradi big. Case closed.

The third season of Robotech is the best, by the way.

As for my opinion on piracy, I do it, but I rarely keep what I download anymore, though there are some exceptions. I have a lot of music, but if I really like something, like Tool, Opeth, or Metallica, I give them my money. I don't download movies anymore, unless netflix doesn't have it, and then I delete it. I don't have an enormous collection of pirate movies, but I have some. A few of them, like 1989 Batman, Rambo First Blood, Fight Club, and Superman, I got the DVD's even though I had pirated them years before.

I will download episodes of stuff, but rarely keep it for very long.
Buy my RiD toys! They're awesome, I promise!!!!

Being the resident Robotech Geek, I'll tell you.

Robotech is one long series:

In this order:

Macross Saga
Robotech II: The Sentinels (Never Finished, only 3 eps. Read the McKinney Sentinels novels, they were written from Macek's scripts)
The Southern Cross
New Generation
The Shadow Chronicles (current series just launched, don't need back story to start watching this, available most everywhere)

As to which collection to buy:

Robotech: Legacy Collection from ADV Films (owned by Harmony Gold)

the Robotech: Masterworks Collections have their merits, too, and are imho the best value for your buck. They collect Not only the Robotech series, but also Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross, and Mospeada. This way, you get to see the series and how it compares to the original.

Anything Robotech you want is here:

It may be "free" but is it "licensed"?

Just because it's streamed doesn't mean it's not pirated.

As for my stance on piracy. I do it. I'm a big torrent user and frequently download the latest tv shows.

Why? Because living in Australia I can sometimes have to wait up until 6 months before it's shown here, and even then it may only be shown for a few weeks before the network decides the ratings aren't good enough and they start shifting it around to different time slots and different times of the week. It's happened plenty of times believe me.

However in most cases i'll also go out and purchases the dvd box set when it becomes available.

Music? Yeah I download an album now and then, if I like it i'll even go out and buy it because I like being able to SEE my cd collection.

Basically I download it if it's not available to me. Once it becomes available to me i'll more than likely pick it up.

What can I say? I grew up on Shareware. Try before you buy. :P

Screw robotech, go with macross instead.
also, pirate to your hearts content. Having series on your harddrive (or streaming sites) always beats having to wait till some tv station starts to show it. etc

ahhh good old Robotech...still watch my Protoform boxset which has ALL the episodes, tons of extra stuff AND Robotech II: The Sentinels.and Kamjiin, if you`re so big a Robotech/Macross fan...why don`t we see your aft in the Official Macross/Robotech toy thread eh? :P and FYI, due to the release of Robotech: Shadow Chronicles, Robotech II has been relegated to secondary continuity since Shadow Chronicles replaces Sentinels with a similar but diferent story.same has happened to the McKinney books.as for toys...well, that would depend on how deep your pockets go Ultraprimal. the 1/100 Toynami VF-1 series are great little toys for a "small" price(in Macross terms)but for the ultimate in detail and "gimmicks" the very expensive Yamato 1/48`s cannot be beaten. these run from around 160 USD up to several hundred.(that would be the highly sought after super/Strike pack included valkyries)for some more news and photo`s of toys that several of us here own, go to New Official Macross/Robotech Thread.though we DO go beyond the original Macross series to Macross Seven, Macross II(discussion mostly), Macross Plus, Macross Zero and the upcoming Macross 25th.and in case you hadn`t heard yet, G1 Jetfire is really a VF-1S with Super armor attached. :P

I'm a pirate! :P

I don't have any place very near me to buy anime and such so I usually do use youtube or another site I know that has them for download. As for other things, I've been using LimeWire Pro somewhat a lot lately.

We don't endorse nor support piracy on the site. As far as I'm concerned, Youtube should only be for creations by fans like AMV's, parodies, etc. If you can purchase a series on DVD, it shouldn't be available for free on youtube. Men and women put their time and life into many of these shows, and because of so many God Damned cheap people, they end up losing hundreds of thousands of dollars. So I must say I'm ashamed at google for allowing so much pirated content on a site they own.

I can't and I won't try and reprimand anyone for doing something outside of this site, but from now on I would suggest that folks not talk about things they've stolen, whether it be digital or physical property.
