War for Cybertron used as a basis for a RoboTech game?

Postby weirdguy » Thu Aug 05, 2010 3:07 am

No, I have not heard any rumors. This is just me thinking and talking.

The War for Cybertron game got me thinking it would be fun to get a RoboTech Battlecry sequel game. The WfC game controls are just right about where they should be for a game like this. I could easily see taking that core gameplay scheme and making a decent RoboTech game from it. Transforming between a Battroid and a Gerwalk, then hitting left trigger on the controller to go to jet, aka boost mode would work.

Now, granted, if somebody wanted my opinion on the gameplay I would want to limit the jet to 12 missiles, unlike Battlecry which gave you 4 missiles that reload every few seconds. That sort of thing bugged me about the game. I would rather go find ammo pickups, or even fly back to base and land to get re-armed over a unplausible thing like unlimited ammo.

I have RoboTech Battlecry for the PS2, and I recommend the game to anybody who owns the PS2. It even has split screen multiplayer, which WfC doesn't have.

I really liked Robotech Battlecry. I actually got it last year from my XBox 360 ( It's a used old Xbox game ). I keep saying I will finish it but there is one mission that is pissing me off to no end. It's an escort mission near the last 3/4 of the game.

You idea is nice. I would love to see a Robotech game done as well as WFC for Transformers was.

I had that Robotech game. I just sold it last week! I've had it for years, and God, I hated it. I couldnt get past the second level. 1 because I was bored with it to no end and 2. do they even give you health in the game? I mean I fought waves and waves of enemies on one bar of health.

I feel the basis would work, but question where to base the game story-wise.

they had a sequel to battlecry called Invasiontakes place during the invid invasion for most of the game you play as a hybrid. It's a FPS/TPS your character rides on Cyclone cycle.

I belive invasion came out prior to Battlecry. Though it takes place in a futre time period.

*Nevermind* It still was no sequel to battle cry.

Invasion came out after Battlecry, and it pretty much kept everything that Battlecry did wrong with none of the elements that Battlecry got right.

I liked Battlecry, but I concur with the opinion here that the escort missions tended towards frustration. It's always easier to blow stuff up than to keep it from getting blown up. And it wasn't like the old Wing Commander game where failure to protect the convoy simply results in a disappointed speech from your boss.

I also thought the reloading missiles were a little peculiar, but I suppose it was a necessary convention. Likewise, it was weird to have artificial ceilings to keep you from just flying out of range.

Overall, though, it was a fun game for Robotech fans, and the choice to use cel-shading was inspired. It was also neat to have the original voice actors reprise their roles and take on new ones (although it was cheap that the character faces lacked animation).

If you are a protoculture addict, it's worth at least playing around with.

Invasion, on the other hand, was woefully boring. I just gave up playing in the early levels because I really didn't care for it. They abandoned the cel-shading, and the transformations were often too forced (sometimes you would be told you couldn't transform for no apparently good reason).

However, I think weirdguy is on to something. Playing a scout in TF is a lot like what a cyclone should be. Heck, the Bumblebee toy even evokes the saber-cyclone's forearm blades.

I think High Moon Studios could get away with Robotech multiplayer game without even bothering with a campaign mode...assuming that the online play was less buggy than War for Cybertron.

non campaign based, REF Task force with a mecha selection of cyclones, hovertanks, alphas and a small selection of battleoids.

Fighting a renegade faction armed with a selection of zentradi and invid mecha could work out.

I'm pretty sure that a RoboTech game would be set in the new, and if you ask me a somewhat lackluster setting of the 3rd Generation's continued story (4th Generation?). This is that Shadow Chronicles era, where the Haydonites are now the bad guys. The Invid have left.

Then again, Carl Macek passed away not long ago, so whoever is now running the show at Harmony Gold may actually be completely different than how they have been up until now.

At least now the guys who would make a new RoboTech game will have a solid title to blatantly copy to get a good playing game.

As for a good story, well lets be honest now. All games have that problem. A poor story can appear anywhere and ruin a much anticipated game. Likewise a good story and also appear anywhere. For example, I think the War for Cybertron story is actually middle of the road. There were barely any new facts revealed in that game. War for Cybertron just had a lot of funny moments, and a lot of things to shoot at, and zero plot twists.

From my discussions with a contact at Harmony Gold, honestly I would think if anything was to come out in the near future it won't be based on Shadow Chronicles due to the series animation being placed on hold while they still figure out if the live-action movie is ever going to happen.

(Toby Maguire is free right now, so he might try to push the project forward)

Honestly, I hope the idea gets shot down and they can get back to working on Shadow Chronicles. Regardless of personal opinions it was received quite well, including fan-subs in Japan where some have treated it (not as Robotech but) as a G.C.Mospeada sequel.

Shadow Chronicles?

The sooner that movie is forgotten, the better.

It lost me the second it rewrote the ending of the cartoon. Plus, the CG made for a much less impressive look. I hate it when sequels unwrite previous plot points.

Robotech as a whole hasn't necessarily aged well, but you still have to respect the complexity of the hand drawn artwork during the battle sequences. Computer animated veritechs cut and pasted across a starfield isn't quite the same. Plus, they created that weird juxtaposition of style that ruined TF Cybertron.

If a Robotech game were based on Shadow Chronicles, I would not buy it.
