I go for old designs, with modifications. To cure the blocks problem.

I just saw the movie for the first time earlier this evening.

Objectively speaking, the designs were alright...when they were standing somewhere close to still.
Any signifigant movement just turned them into a blurry eyesore, and the climactic battle made it even worse. By the end of the film my eyes felt numb in their sockets.
So no, these designs weren't ever essential to making the characters look real. Thats BS, and its always been BS. I'll say that it was rather effective BS though because many fans have swallowed it like it was Megan Fox's used bath water.
A simpler and more classical look would have worked much better. Its a pity too because the film overall was better than I thought, even despite all the military-porn sequences

I actually liked the designs.

Problem is, they won't be able to generate a wider audience if they stuck to G1 designs. It'd just end up like TMNT that way.

FYI, i think Megan Fox is about as attractive as a hippo's bung hole. Im 22 and married btw, and i dont have the typical teenager fanboy crush on this so called "hot" chick that so many people seem to which seems to be the only reason YOU think people like this movie.

The designers really should have used the original models as a basis, and then updated them. Jazz is a good example of this.

My god, I wish I was that artistic. THose are amazing.

Though they still look like cartoons, even translated to a movie (people will automatically think "cartoon" when they see them), but still, I'd totally watch a live action movie with those guys in it.

Are there any more of those?

i completly agrre with the subject when the did close up of prime i can see gears and his blue eye move around i can see every bit of detail on his face especially others but i still say prime showed more detail than all other robots in teh film his eyes, sys sockets, mouth,.

if it was that cartoon generation style look of the film i would have only seen the film once and go see harry potter, and simpsons if they made them that blocky styleas a fan i would hate it would not even buy the movie if it was that blocky aniomation type that some of the fans really wanted them to look like.

ps. they looks more realalistic looking with there new modern day looks

Are there any more of those?

yeah there quite few out there ive seen them on a site somewhere forgot where, theres pime, metroplex, starscream, unicron, and others

Heheh...How old you say you were, again?
On the serious tip...better make sure you can take the jive if you're going to dish it out there, homes! If not, you'll go out like a sucker every time.

Now, back to the design issue: I'm wondering if you guys and gals in the pro-Bay camp have any Animation experience, or are instead just parroting Bay verbatim(?) If ya'll like the designs so much, then why do you need to defend them? Doesn't that indicate a guilty conscience? :-?
Seriously tho...the most common thing I've heard from fans and critics alike is that it was hard to tell who was who and what the f**k was going on in the climactic battle. What could have solved this problem would be far simpler but still realistic designs. Something more faithful to Tfs roots would have been better, not as a literal cut n' paste from the 80s toon but something akin to the Masterpiece and Alternator toys. Again, not literally, but in those lines you have the basis for character models that are detailed, realistic and far more recognizable. It would have pleased more people and made a decent film even better.
