What are the things you'd change about G1 characters back in 1984?

There is more to Transformers than movies, cartoons, comics and toys. Discuss anything else Transformers here.

The disparity of the sizes between the seekers and the cars is annoying, too. That shoulda been sorted cos fighting between the two was always difficult. The Insecticons were a funny height. Character height in general should have been far better controlled right from the off.

You've got City size - Fortress Mazimus and Scorponok should have met in the middle height-wise cos Fort Max was ridiculous, including Metroplex, Trypticon, and maybe Omega Supreme in that lot... always thought Omega was more Decep material too...

Then there should have been gestalt size, just up the shoulder of the city boys...

Followed by leader size, like Shockwave and Jetfire... and their lieutenants Blaster and Soundwave. Soundwave is the quintessential Decepticon, always... dude... :MR-T:

But!! We digress!! With that original pack of 1984 moulds, which didn't include Jetfire and Shockers if I'm not mistaken(??), then they picked it right. Prime and that trailer shoulda combined from the off, Powermaster Prime was a perfect size to battle Galvatron and caught the obvious mixed trick from the original line.

Soundwave, again as the tallest of the 84 moulds, and with those tape-tastic slaves of his to command, would have been a great pic for leader, with a more aggressive Meg-ish personality.... but then, Meggy was a freakin gun, and a damned realistic one at that...

Nope, don't think I woulda done much differently after all... nice exercise though, original Sizzle...

Gotta say, I love the Mr.T face
I also like the idea of having Combiners be near the height of City Bots, I always felt the Combiners should be the strongest anyways since they're made of a bunch of other strong robots and have the drawback of usually being unintelligent.

Personally, I think I would've kinda gotten rid of the whole HeadMasters concept....it always seemed pretty dumb to me, I'm guess alot would disagree there though. I still like TargetMasters though...is that ok enough?

See, Headmasters weren't too bad in my eyes, but yeah, why lose yr head?? It also killed off Budiansky in a big way. After all the effort he put into the wonderful Headmasters series, where he managed to introduce umpteen new toy characters without feeling like they were crowbarred in, he was never the same again. Especially after he was then made to kill off Galen in favour of Spike.

Targetmasters were kinda lost in all that a bit. Some juicy characters that never got developed that well, again a bit of a shame. I liked the whole reversible head Horrorcon thing. What a strange afterthought that was...

Mr T's under the View more smilies bit. Like this guy, always a bit if a favourite... :BEAVIS:

Mostly the bold is what I don't get, apparently there's supposed to be some psychological benefits or something but, just weird to me.
And yeah, I don't know, didn't like Spike as an adult for some reason, no idea who Galen was but I think a new character...or old in this case...sort of, would have worked.
As far as TargetMasters I just kinda like the Weaponry alt-modes for some reason.

I'd take away their ability to fly. Honestly, when was the last time you saw a truck fly in the air when there wasn't a ramp or if it was falling off of somthing?

I forgot all about that, one of the dumber things of G1, everyone can just jump up and fly away.....

And when Metroplex tossed Trypticon with him floating BETWEEN and AROUND stuff, that was just ridiculous.

I wouldn't change anything about the bios, but I'd change some of the Episodes. I would change some of them so character don't end up having multiple origins, and I would try to keep most of the action on Earth.

One thing I would've done in later episodes is show new Autobots/Decepticons, but in other parts of the world. I would have loved to see Autobots set up bases and try to adopt to the local cultures and languages there. Surely they can't all reside in the US, can they? It would take this to a global scale, and make the Decepticon threat more insidious. They would not only be stealing energon, but they would be trying to influence the population in other countries to be against the Autobots.

On this, I would mostly change StarScream's Brigade's ending. Instead of being suckerpunched by Menasor I would have had Bruticus go down some alternate way, maybe Megatron has a secret weapon or something which Menasor uses like a...giant death ray. But Bruticus can't be so unobservant not to notice something THAT BIG flying straight at him.

Well...he could, but I want him to be as awesome as possible. I like your going worldwide idea though.
I also wouldn't have had the huge timejump to the future, the whole future theme changed the atmosphere of the show to me and it just didn't feel right.

I thought that if they were scattered worldwide, it would make a lot more sense considering Megatron wants to repower Cybertron, because there would be many more guys trying to collect energon. Right now (in the cartoon) it looks like there are only a few guys (Megatron's group) doing this.
I agree with you about the time jump thing also. Not only does it change the 'feel,' but 'futuristic' stuff in shows risks looking really hokey once the realtime date rolls around and it never ends up happening.

Another thing I would have done with the later episodes is explore in depth what Megatron was planning to do with Earth and it's people. It was mentioned in his bio that he was planning to actually take over Earth, and so (I assume) not just take it's energon. It might've meant that he wanted to make Earth a second Cybertron, but one where the Decepticons ruled.

Now this is the part where I would've added a bit of darkness to my later seasons. Once the Decepticons took over, what was Megatron planning to do with all those humans? He could use them as slave labor, or he could use them as a way to rapidly build a new army without having to rely on Vector Sigma. If the Autobots were able to transfer Spike's mind into that cobbled-together robot, then the Decepticons could do the same but using enslaved humans and mass-produced Transformer bodies to create a ready army of mooks.
Now while that scenerio might not come to pass in the show, it would give the Autobots a tactical reason (and not just because they like humans) of why they have to stay on Earth and defeat the Decepticons. They don't want to leave the Decepticons a means of victory.

Galen was the original character who took the place of the head for Fortress Maximus. He was a Nebulan, head of "the World Watchers" but the only one of those ever seen. This is all from the American Headmasters comic run which was re-run as a back-up strip in the weekly UK comic which I collected religiously as a kid.

He was a strong advocate of peace on Nebulos and as such hit it off well with the Autobots once they got talking. Zarak was his political adversary who was more in favour of re-arming Nebulos and eventually, obviously, got in woth Scorponok and crew. An extra bit of spice was added as Galen was engaged to Llyra, Zarak's daughter. It was among the American comic writer Bob Budiansky's finest work, Galen was a great character and the whole series worked well. In an interview I read the binning of the character in favour of Spike was a big de-motivator when he was subsequently bombarded with new characters to introduce.
