What is the real reason for all of the mystery and intrigue surrounding Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen? I cannot imagine the studio is worried that if fanboys know about the robot cast they will not see the picture. TF-fanboys will see the movie regardless of the bots or their appearance. Sure, there are a few die-hards who will claim they will not see the movie (although I have yet to come across a member of Seibertron who has not watched the first movie irregardless of his opinion of the bots), but that population is so small it is not worth counting.
So, I think it is safe to say fanboys will see the move just because they are fanboys. Therefore, there is not a negative financial impact on the studio if a few thousand TF fanboys have inside information. Sure, there might be more headaches but I cannot image the headaches outweigh the trouble of creating a disinformation campaign. The only monetary implication I can come up with is mystery might drive more people to the theater. However, everyday movie goers are not hunting the internet for inside information about the production of a film.
Another explanation might be the rooted in Michael Bay’s desire to see fanboys squirm. After all, they did put him through the ringer during the making of the first movie. Again, I come back to the cost benefit mentioned above. The cost of providing false rumors and misinformation might be on par with change costs brought about by complaints. Who knows?
One thing that is known is the effort made by the fanboys created a better picture. I have read and listened to fanboy acknowledgments from many people associated with the creation of the first movie (even Michael Bay tips his hat to fans on the DVD). Why would the studio want to remove that component? Nothing good comes from group-think.

Studios and companies have a plan for when they will release information on their product.
Part of why there is a wait is because certain parts may change completely or may be altered in some way. When info leaks on the web, and later that info has changed before the final product comes out, people get upset that what they initially expected isn't there.
This happens with Video Games too, for example... like Halo.
So, I think companies would rather have the "better be safe than sorry" motto and wait until they are absolutely sure certain stuff is "set in stone" before they release that information to their fans.
That's my educated guess, at least.

This really is not some Transformers exclusive thing, the details of books, movies, and TV shows are often kept secret. Spoilers have a way of leaking out to the public and while I'm not convinced the impact would be severe it might interfere with sales or viewing figures in some small manner. And really the TF fandom is no less obsessive than other fandoms who will go out of their way to garner every little tiny spoiler and detail they can ahead of time. If you want an extreme example, just look at Harry Potter fans, those guys are INSANE.
Anyhoo. It's a funny world when some people will go out of their way to spoil themselves on such things. It ruins the impact of the final product IMO. But I suppose I know that sometimes the suspense can be oh so frustrating.

I understand keeping things underwraps, but why release misleading and wrong information? Doing so runs counter to your argument (which I beleive, BTW).

It maintains secrecy. Like how they make several different endings to TV shows to keep people guessing when the details leak out.
I know if I were working on this movie, I'd not want anybody to know what was going on until it hit theaters. If it were me I wouldn't even want a trailer, but in this advertising dominated world that is just not feasible.

WIth this movie you get to wonder how much information is actually misinformation put out by the producers themselves. I do believe they said they would do it.

I guess where I am comming from is will the missinformation pis people off? People are now expecting Devastator. If Devastator is not in the film many, many people will be let down and pissed. The same holds true for Megatron.
I understand keeping people guessing, but building hopes only to squash them is crazy.

It wouldn't matter if it upset them, they wouldn't have a leg to stand on, as it were. The Devastator rumours and Megatron pictures are from unofficial, unsupported sources. If they want to believe it and it ends up being false, that's their own look out.
If the information is false, then it's just too bad, nothing anyone can do about it. Obsessing over these things is pointless, nothing is set in stone until you're sitting in that theater with the movie up on the big screen.
Not that any of it matters. Nothing and none of it matters. Still going to be a Transformers movie regardless of whatever true or false leaks we may get.
(Sadly.

I read a rumor that a girl Sam is with is really a decepticon. If that is true that would be really interesting to see how they figured out how to make a robot look like a girl.

There are a few possibilities.
As for a reason why things should be kept secret...would Empire Strike Back have been as good if Lucas had announced half-way through production "Oh, yeah, and we find out that Vader is Luke's father"? Instead, he told Irvin Kershner, Mark Hamill, and James Earl Jones what was going on, while everyone else just heard David Prowse read the line "Obi-Wan killed your father."
If you don't want a movie spoiled, the best way is to tell people the wrong thing.
