G1 was a terrible cartoon, and the original animated movie wasn't shakespeare. But I still love 'em.
I have the first two seasons and the movie on DVD and still watch them today, the animation is terrible and the writing is even worse, but it has a lot of charm, and it's really entertaining. In fact, it's probably so fun to watch because it's so bad.
There were a couple episodes that were so terrible no one should ever have to sit through them (Girl Who Loved Powerglide, Carnage in C-Minor, Surprise Party) but for the most part they weren't so bad. Sure, G1 had Wheelie and Blurr later on, but all the human characters sans Daniel were even likeable, which isn't really the case with Rad, kicker, and all those other annoying kids.
G1 and Beast Wars are my favorite shows just because I get a kick out of watching them. Beast Wars actually had decent writing, and G1's writing is so bad that it's good. There's a bunch of unintentionally funny things in the show (Chip Chase: "Courage!!").
So yeah, if you hate G1, it's ok. You can always watch those boring anime versions.
You know the only reason I wont see the movie is....

Most of his personality comes from the toybox description, where I believe he's described as the most efficiently logical strategist the G1 autobots have. Those things by themselves would be enough to ingrain him in the minds of many.
In the Marvel US comics Prowl was pretty much either a background character or he was deactivated for most of the time (#50-75). He came back in #75 was featured pretty much as Grimlock's second in command in the last few issues (#76-80) of that series and the banter between Prowl and Grimlock was Furman's best writing to date period.
I don't think he appeared in the G2 series and if he did it wasn't in anything memorable.
Prowl was in several the early Marvel UK stories including Prey, Dinobot Hunt, and Target: 2006 but he was most notably in Perchance to Dream and quite a few of the Earthforce stories as Grimlock's second in command again.

Seriously, these attacks on each other's opinions and tastes are really getting old.
Prowl had his moments, not as many as some, but he stood out more than most.

Why does everyone hate "The Girl Who Loved Powerglide"? It's one of the only five episodes I can actually stomach.

best of the best of tf's? crappy g1 cartoons? LOL you just proved what kind of "fan" you are.
Kimmer you need to simmer down, please. No attacks.
Back on topic, you are right guys, Prowl is MIA as far as leading air time on the show. However, even though it shows he's weak, I liked the episode where he and Bluestreak were chasing the jets, and Prowl got damaged. Chip took control of him. Like I said, shows Prowl is weak, but it was a feature.
In the Marvel Comics, he did lead a lot of missions when the Autobots first started checking out the new world.
Finally, Prowl was like my third transformer ever, thus, he has a special place right here (pounds chest, and tears up).
