I think it's pretty obvious at this point that the movie is just a dumb action epic (Independence Day, Godzilla 98) rather than cool character driven Sci-Fi (Star Trek, X-men 1 and 2). I would have prefered that, to this. I think a lot of people feel that way too.
The script is very, very bad. Sure dialogue will change from this version to the next, but the core concepts are all there. And they are just not very good.
The biggest problem is that this is not a movie about Transformers. That was never the concept to begin with. It's a movie about people dealing with Transformers, which is very different. It would be like if the X-men movies were told from the point of view of a regular person who meets up with Wolverine. It's just not as interesting as it could be.
The designs still, in my opinion, are universally bad. They didn't have to be G1 (I actually kinda like Trans-tech) but they didn't have to be this weird insect robo skeleton hangy bit stuff either. And I think we all agree Megatron looks horrible- and he's the main villain- that says a lot.
I stand by that the people involved just weren't the right ones to do this. How much cooler would this film have been headed up by Luc Besson (5th element) or Alex Proyas (Dark City). Directors who know something about sci-fi/fantasy and art direction. Bay is just way too literal for me, and more than a little boring.
I know I can't stop the movie from coming out- I just hope that no more follow it.
