Looks pretty good, and definitely a promising first attempt.
What materials and tools did you use for this sculpt? For something like this, I'd usually use Green Stuff/Kneadatite (Kneadatite is the original brand name, Green Stuff is what they sell it as at Games Workshop), as it's quite stiff to work with and holds details well. I've got a set of four double-ended dental-style steel sculpting tools as well, that I picked up at my local hobby shop for a few quid. One is a lot like that sold at GW stores (which in itself is very versatile).
I'd say the best way would be to work in layers (which it looks like you have); I'd start by working on the face, allowing space around it for the helmet, and allow that to cure. Then I'd add the main crest of the helmet, and once that's set, the 'buns'. At each stage, it's usually best to form the main shape, leave it for a while, and once it's partly set, score in panel lines; that way the putty retains its shape, and holds the details that much more effectively.
