The SOC Voltes V is a pretty nice figure. If you choose it be sure to get the GX-31V version, It has slight mold differences than the origional GX-31 release that allow it to make the Voltank mode. Also the paint scheme is slightly different too. CollectionDX has a nice review of the figure and alot of other Soul of Chogokin figures too.

Basically it comes down to what figure you feel is more worth your money. Personally I would buy Masterpiece Grimlock (and I did when it was first released), But I also have no nostalgia for Voltes V.

Voltes V shouldn't even be compared with MP Grimlock. Voltes V is a masterpiece of robot figure engineering.

As much as I love MP Grimlock I'm gonna have to go with Voltes V. I have never taken so much time to just sit and stare at each and every piece of a figure before. I think it was over an hour before I even began to combine him, as I was just awestruck by how beautiful the individual pieces were. As GetterDragun said it's a marvel of engineering.

A marvel of engineering? He hasn't even got knees. Can someone explain why he's so great? These pics aren't much to go on and I can't find any good ones on google.

Good choice! MP Grimlock is good, but no where near this. When you open him and see all the pieces, and then try things out, like the sword coming out of his chest, or how his hand drops down and a gun is placed behind, you'll see why there is no comparison. I'll post pics in this thread later.

There is a good 3 part video review of Voltes V on youtube, showing off all the gimmicks. I watched it before answering. Having never watched Soul of Chogokin I have no emotional attachment to the robot, 'tank' or its uncombined forms. Hence why I recommended Grimlock.
In my opinion, the Voltes V looks like a very interesting and playable toy with lots of references to the cartoon it is from, and has been made with great attention to detail. However, in my opinion (I understand how fans of the cartoon would feel very differently) it looks damn ugly in every form, is a partsformer in the worst possible way, and besides, I am a huge Grimlock fan, so Grimlock was always going to win for my part (never mind that MP Grimlock is my 2nd favourite Transformer).

To be fair, it's a combiner and it's supposed to use multiple vehicle components to form one giant robot.

It looks like the vehicle Voltron my Grandma gave me when I was little. Of course, I wanted the Lion version, but what the hell did she know about Voltron? She lived on a pig farm.

Geekee1 has given me a hyped positive recommendation for this Voltes V toy, but it's in the vein of robot that I just have no love for.

Yes, but that is not really what I am referring to. Under the base is stored a squillion tiny, easily lost spare parts, such as all the bits of landing gear that rather than retracting, just comes off (Also stores the accessories, but hey, MP Grimmers has accessories too). That just makes me stare in horror. With my G1 collection I have two large bags of spare parts, it is just part of the collecting game, but there are some limits. I could so see those tiny wheels being lost.

Oh, gotcha. :)

I just watched the 3 part Collection DX video review of the figure and I must say, it's very impressive. The aesthetics aren't for everyone as it's based on an anime 21 years old. I like it but I don't love it. I haven't watched the anime it's from so I don't have any sentimental attachment. However, the toy engineering is pretty darn amazing. I'm also surprised by its stability considering the amount of die cast in its construction.

I think that on a pure toy engineering level, SoC Voltes V beats MP Grimlock, which, as far as I have seen in video reviews and galleries, doesn't "wow" me on a toy design level.

I agree, if I was given one, I would not throw it away or chuck it on eBay, but I would hardly treasure it the way I do my Masterpiece figures. It is a very interesting bit of engineering, but for the price tag it carries you would certainly hope so! I imagine for Soul of Chogokin fans I assume it is a 'holy grail' of sorts.

That's not true. All those extra parts are for different poses or to dress up the figure differently. He does not need to those parts to form the robot.

It's not a grail figure, it's just a regular one. The expensive one rigth now is Aussenseiter and Daiensaguaouaoahauh (however you spell it). That brand new is almost $400.

Ok, sorry, I was just calling it from what I saw on the videos, with all the tiny bits everywhere it looked like a bit of a nightmare. I am guessing the accessories would be cool if you knew the background behind them.
