My Classics Ultra Magnus UPDATED- face repainted

Postby Massdestruction » Mon Aug 27, 2007 6:59 am

Been working on him for a little while but now he's finally finished. The only things removable are the missles and handgun. The chest plate, shoulder stacks and cab halves are permanantly attached and are part of the transformation.

And as a preemptive, Tramp, everyone already know all about your feelings about Ultra Magnus' trailer and armor. SO DON'T HIJACK MY THREAD WITH ARMOR ARGUMENTS.

That's really well done, and proper clever. What did you do to the head? And is there any chance of showing some of the transformation process, so we can see how it's done?

That's really nice. I have no customizing talents at all, but I can appreicate the hard work going into one.

The paint looks a little thick in some spots, almost clumpy, but still an awesome custom job.

Did a few parts of Titanium UM end up in there?

Nope, nothing from any other transformer was used in this custom. However, a few Zoids and a CD case bravely gave their lives.

Very Impressive piece of work, here!

Yes, his waist is supposed to be backwards, it was part of the mod. The back of the original waist was easier to resculpt into the white cod piece.

Wow...these are the sorts of extensive mods i want to learn how to do. Being a master at re-painting is a bit pointless if you cant scratchbuild and mod. Howd ya do all that and what materials did you use?

Here's the instructions. I omitted the part of the instructions where you transform the arms, head and swivel the torso because they did not change.

The paint application seems to have a texture to it, which is the only thing that bothers me about the end results.

What interests me most is how you handled getting rid of his Arm Shields / Cruft, by making them a part of the grill and front bumper.

Those images are super small, anything I can look more closely at?

PS - How did you make the front sides of the truck tuck in while attached to the front bumper and grill?

It's not really a texture, it's more that it's somewhat metallic. I custom mixed blue with silver and a touch of white and it gives it a little metallic sparkle.

DavidBeoulve wrote:How did you make the front sides of the truck tuck in while attached to the front bumper and grill?

I attached some of the black plastic twist tie holders (that plague almost every transformer purchase) to the bumper and carved a path into them for the truck sides to slide back and forth on.

Ahh, the metallic sparkle sounds really cool in person.

I would love some more photos... without flash might bring out more of what is actually there. Try taking some photographs without a flash by mounting your camera on something - a box, anything that will let it hold still, and take 5 of the same shot if your camera works at all like mine; the first might blur from the button press, the next few will be delayed if you press the button immediately again, depending on the speed of your camera, and several will have varying color saturation levels.

The sliders... what is hooked to what? That's a purely awesome job and, as most everyone's complaint about Classics Voyager Optimus Prime is his arm cruft, it'd be great if you showed exactly what you did there to handle it.

If it's not something you're interested in doing then don't let me bug you; I see something and I like it, I want to know how it's done not just go "Oooo!" ;)

here's a quick digi of the slider. It is plastic attached to the bumper with a large enough line cut out for the screw to easily slide from side to side. The screw is then attached to the bottom of the cab halves. In order to keep the cab halves from rotating around while being slid, I cut out a groove into the bumper that the cab halves can ride against. Hope this helps. I might try taking some photos of the workings, but it's not easily accessable or viewable now that it's assembled.

Ofcourse, if you are doing a straight Optimus Prime mod, it's easier to just glue the cab halves directly to the bumper. That's the method I used initially as my first mod of Ultra Magnus a few months back and it worked great... until recently when I put the shoulder stacks onto the figure. Found out that the stacks crashed into the cab halves when moving the arm up, so he couldn't raise his arms straight up. So that's why I needed to create the sliders, now the arms can move unhindered.

But yeah, just gluing them to the bumper works great for a Optimus Prime mod. It doesn't hinder him arm movement.

Ironhide

You are the weapon specialist. You are probably the only Autobot who doesn't give a crud about the humans and repeatedly asks permission to blow something up. You are very strong and big as well as always suggesting the BIGGER sort of weapon. You are also good at sports; mostly contact sports. You can be easily irritated and may have anger issues. You also have a huge truck mode. Sweet.
