I wonder if you could add the chrome effect on the standard figures at home with paint?

If you had paints with a metallic sheen, maybe. Real "chrome" is actually vacuum-metalised plastic and as such requires a separate set of machinery. I recall one Japanese fan commissioning a factory to completely metalise his Fortress Maximus!

The only thing that they got right is optimus primes vehicle mode. But then he transformes into a skeleton looking robot. Where's the beef?

What both of these figures needed to hook collectors was proper paint apps, Optimus to bring out his detail, and Grimlock in his movie colours (what we have seen in the trailer at least.) Chrome wouldn't be a bad thing in the right places on Prime...but...I mean this is random and silly...
It's worrying how badly they just don't have their finger on the pulse with this anymore...

robots looking like skeletons?.. wow that guy has no clue what he's talking about.. maybe in his world all of the robots are supposed to look like bulkhead. . that's comical.

d'oh!
I've always liked how the Japanese TFs I've got have had instructions for both ways. Maybe it's not all of them (I tend not to spring for the imports) but it is quite helpful sometimes, as occasionally "reverse instructions" doesn't always seem to work right.
