Beast Wars Repaints Vs G1 Repaints

Postby skyshadowprimus » Fri Oct 19, 2007 4:32 pm

Just keen to get other peoples opinions on why there is a lot of opposition to BW repaints of characters I.E. B'Boom and Apache Vs Prowl & Bluestreak

I had a long hard think about it and for me personally it is due to the fact i grew up with these characters in G1 and seeing them on a TV show it is easier to distinguish between the 2, than two identical images with no voices in a book.

Having my first taste of the same characters with different paint jobs via a comic book really cheapens it for me, unless they are botcon exclusives then there are given a big leading role which is again easy to seperate the two.

Just wondered if other felt the same and what your reasons are?

I didn't know there was opposition.

But one of the reasons might be because a lot of the Beast Wars II "repaints" weren't really repainted at all. Apache, Tasmania Kid, and Scuba to name a few changed very little(if at all) from their American counterparts. Other guys, like Magnaboss or Tripledacus(that is the Japanese spelling) only got slightly repainted to look a little better for the most part.

Yeah, I don't think 'opposition' is the right word, so much as 'confusion'. B'Boom and Apache are basically the same toy with marginally different paint apps, as the Duke said, so when both characters turn up separately in comics, it's going to be hard to tell them apart.
Nobody (as far as I'm aware) has any issues with the likes of Waspinator/Buzzsaw, Dinobot/Grimlock or Wolfang/K9, because they're different enough to easily distinguish.

Or Terrorsaur, Fractyle, and Laserbeak. kinda strange for Ravage to be in such high regard and Laserbeak to be the BW starscream's repaint :?

:-? For that matter... are buzzsaw, and laserbeak name sakes or there G1 counter parts?

Namesakes, as far as I can tell. From what I've seen of Buzzsaw's bio, he's nothing like G1. And the other one doesn't even have the same name - the BW guy is called Lazorbeak, not Laserbeak.

And Ravage wasn't a redeco anyway (at least not the original one), he was a pretty major retool - he's based on the TM Cheetor mould, but a lot of changes were made. Besides which, Ravage is probably held in higher regard because of his cool factor in the series.

oh, i see. Although i would have given buzzsaw the ravage treatment if possible.

Only three times have I seen OmegaSupreme go down.

1. Army of electrum dipped Decepticons (yellow in G1 toon)

2. A lone electrum synthesizing seeker clone with a reactor (yellow in DW comic)

3. A lone yellow cassettecon fighting for the glory of the Decepticons (Marvel comic)

In the toon Laserbeak may have been the most effective con followed closely by ravage, but Buzzsaw owned he comic

<hr>
Was a transmetal buzzsaw (TM terrorsaur or TM waspinator repaint) to much to ask for?

Were the Japanese bios for Apache, Tasmania Kid, etc. significantly different to the bios for B'Boom, Snarl, etc? TFU.info doesn't have listings for them as it seems to regard the repaints as the same character (for all intents and purposes).

You have to give some credit to Don though, he's made it possible to tell them apart. In The Ascending Apache is always drawn with his missiles and guns retracted into his shoulders, whereas B'Boom's are always deployed. Their proportions are slightly different and I think their hue is supposed to be as well, but that seems to be the reliable way to distinguish them.

Also, I believe Beast Wars Era versions of G1 Laserbeak and Buzzsaw were released as Energon Divebomb repaints at Botcon 2006.
Check out my books, Titanomachies and Divine Retribution, on my blog!

B'Boom vs Apache

Snarl vs Tasmania Kid

Definitely different characters.
