Cosmos' is a flying saucer.
Why would Cosmos' alt mode be a flying saucer?
It's not much of a disguise. A flying saucer is what it is. An alien spacecraft.

Yeah, but it's not a robot. I figure Teletran One spotted something similar flying near the Ark, and assumed at the time that it was an earth vehicle.

Wel, cosidering that Cosmos was not one of th original Ark members, it is very likely he came to Earth later and didn't choose an Earth mode. Also, considering that his mission and function leaves him in outer space most of the time, as well as his quirky sense of humor, his "flying Sucer" alternate mode just makes sense for him. Even if it is a mode he chose on earth, it is probable he chose it himself, not Teletran-1, possibly from some old sci-fi B-movie. More than likely though, that is his native form.

When people see a flying saucer, they don't think. "Hey, thats not a flying saucer, thats a giant alien robot!"
They instead go and tell everyone they saw a flying saucer. Then everyone calls them crazy, and nobody cept a few believe them.
So what better vehicle mode than one where if seen the people call you crazy, and the government denies it anyway.

Actually, Cosmos's alt mode is Terran (from Earth). I don't know what they're called though.
To Wikipedia!!!

EDIT: Nevermind, I stand corrected.
I always thought Cosmos was suppose to be one of the Space shuttle "landing back to earth" pod things.

Actually, Cosmos' alt form is really based on a UFO. It's design is based on the famous photo, and subsequent drawings, taken by supposed alien abuductee George Adamski of a UFO.

Interesting note, that the Japanese name for Cosmos is Adams, based the name George Adamski.

I always played it out as that was Cosmos' Seibertron mode. In the 1950's he was exploring this quadrant of the universe(looking for the lost OP and crew). He came to Earth and caused quite a stir, somewhere in New Mexico. He then went back to Seib's.
Fast forward to 1984 and the TF's are now active on Earth. Once Megs brought Seibs into Earths orbit(to harness the energy) the second wave of toys, err, I mean characters, came to earth due to there relative closeness. The ranks were swelled on both sides.
Cosmos then came back into the picture, but he didn't cause the same uproar as he did in the '50's due to giant Alien robot Transformers being of greater importance.

No. Cosmos didn't get his alternate mode from Teletran-1. He isn't omne of the original Ark crew mwmbers. He came to Earth later.

alt modes don't have to be for disguise,
they can also be used for combat, mobility, specialty jobs and other things.
A flying saucer is a good mode for someone who's in space a lot.

Ok, Ok. The toys is designed from that dude form back then.
In the story he was not given a background.
My story is, that dude from back then saw cosmos and the toy design was based from it.
So Cosmos is his own grandpa...(50 points for anyone who gets this reference)

No, purely from a toy design (not story background) standpoint. Cosmos is based on a photo and subsequent drawings made by George Adamski of a UFO he claims to have had contact with.
The reasons for Cosmos alt form was never expressly stated.

I always figured that was his Cybertronian alt. mode. Oh, and DjDrew&ScoobyDoo, how'd you get a MIB Bugbite?

It's not Bugbite. It's a white Cliffjumper by Antex out of Argentina.
