Agreed...as good as an idea as feedback is, it is unfortunate that it can be used simply as a retaliation tool.
There needs to be some kind of Ebay moderator to address situations where a retaliatory feedback is in question.
It's a billion+ dollar company, they should be able to afford some kind of fix for the problem you would think
As a rule of thumb though, these are some rules to live by if you want to have a good and positive Ebay experience:
1) Be patient as a buyer AND seller. Some transactions inevitably are going to take over a week to complete; if it gets to be 2-3 weeks THEN start POLITELY inquiring about what is going on. One thing that people need to realize is Ebay is not like going into a store and buying something. The instant gratification factor is gone since you need to wait on shipping times. This usually is what ticks people off 9 times out of 10.
2) When it comes to leaving feedback, I usually leave it first when I am the BUYER and after my items have arrived in good order. There are those sellers that jump the gun and leave +feedback due to quick payment before the buyer does. While that is nice and good, I don't see that as a good reason to leave feedback first. You leave yourself as a seller wide open to retaliatory feedback if something goes wrong (ie Post office delivers late and you're blamed).
As a seller, I NEVER leave feedback first. I just don't see a reason for it.
3) Be wary of sellers that have under 100 rating. Even though 100 is a somewhat respectable rating, you still want to be sure that their record is SPOTLESS. Nowadays even sellers with over a thousand rating can be shady, but under 100 is considered a relative new user to the Ebay community and thus should be looked at with scrutiny. If a seller has even ONE negative in the past month I would look elsewhere unless there was a GOOD reason for that negative being there (which the seller usually explains as a note under the feedback...if there is no explanation that tells me the seller doesn't care what is said about him and hence not worth giving my business to).
So those are just 3 bullets off the top of my head. I have a 400+ rating as a buyer and seller and to date have had only ONE problem. A dumbass that gave me negative feedback 2 weeks after we completed our transaction where I had already given him positive feedback; his excuse.."oh sorry, I got you confused with another user." I was a noob myself at the time so I didn't know about the mutual withdrawl of feedback option so I was stuck with that one mark on my record...hence my 99.4% rating now
...I did rip him a new one though in my feedback explanation for everyone to see
Sorry for the novel, but hopefully it's of a little help to some.
