I'm a Springer, Snarl, Prowl, Blaster, Defensor, Sideswipe fan...
None of whom are among the top favorites in most usual circles like you mentioned.
Then there's the Pretenders which many people are not fans of...
I guess I'm just an odd ball.

I've seen a ton of fics with Sideswipe and Prowl in them, though. There was even one where Prowl got fed up with Sideswipe's pranks and decided to try and out-prank him. Lots of fan art on DevArt, also.
I'm another Blaster fan. And I also really like Ratchet (although he is written about and drawn frequently), Tracks, Red Alert, Inferno, Springer, Swoop, Ironhide, Wheeljack (in the same boat as Ratchet), Blitzwing, Swindle and Sixshot. (And if you guessed I prefer the cast of seasons 1 and 2 of Gen1 to seasons 3 and "4", you guessed right.)

Well, let's see... As mentioned earlier, Thrust, Swoop, Sideswipe, Swindle and Sixshot. And I'll add, Divebomb, Razorclaw, Blades, Dead End and Strafe. I'm quite partial to those guys. They're all such wonderful characters!

Well, I know there are Prowl factions out there, and factions who love the first brother bots, but they really don't get much consideration in amongst the tops: Hot Rod, Prime, Bumblebee, Starscream, Soundwave, Megatron...

My icon pretty much says it all. Skids is the man... er, bot. He was also the one G1 toy I clearly remember looking all over for, but could never find.
I also, for some reason, really dig Grapple and Hoist, especially Grapple. Going by his original tech specs, the guy was heavily armed enough to be the most bad aft architect ever.
Other lesser known characters I really like: Sixshot(great toy), the Terrorcons, Snarl, and Fireflight. I thought Fireflight was better than the Seekers(ducks heavy objects hurled by Seeker fans).
Oh, and Roller! I can't imagine there are a lot of huge Roller fans in the world. =D

Well I am aknown Megatron fan but I am also a big fan of:
Skywarp, Kickback, for some reason bugly (only con pretender I ever had), Rippersnapper (one of the last toys I owned before my stepmom gave them to my cousin), Astrotrain (my first Triplechanger), the other Dinobots (I like Grimmy too, it's just they aren't as popular as Grimlock), Sideswipe, and for some reason I cannot explain Tailgate.

Always been a fan of Dogfight mainly because he was my first ever TF and funnily enough Guzzle too, although neither recieved much in the way of characterization outside the profiles.
For ones that got time on the shows
Blitzwing - One of the few cons outside of the main characters that actually got more characterization than being a thug or scared of Megatron/Galvatron. His role in Five Faces of Darkness was pretty cool.
Brawn - Minibot who beats the crap out of most cons with cheesy one liners to boot, what more can I say?

Hmmm..
I like Dirge, Skywarp and Thundercracker.
The idea of using sound to induce fear in your enemies just sounds darkly beautiful and poetic. I think thats why I really like Dirge. Plus he gives everbody the creeps
Skywarp: He's in black, purple and silver, plus he seems to have more interesting expressions on his face.
Thundercracker: He's a closet good guy in a way.

Astrotrain-a transport and he always gave me a sense that he was a powerhouse among the season 2 'cons. Also, look at my avatar...kinda explains itself.
Cliffjumper & Mirage-Mirage always had that aloof nature to him, and Cliffjumper was always there to question his loyalty.
Brawn-stocky midget powerhouse. I think when he used Megatron's own fusion cannon on him was his defining moment.
First Aid-he's the Transformers' equivalent of GI Joe's Lifeline; both are pacifists in the midst of a war.
Thundercracker & Skywarp-these guys desereved so much more development than they received.
Battlechargers-punks, plain and simple.
Rumble-I see him as the anti-Bumblebee, the Decepticon's mascot...while Bumblebee idolizes 'bots like Prime and Prowl, Rumble idolizes Soundwave and Megatron.
Powerglide (yes, I'm a Powerglide fan)-he's one of the only Autobots who had a relationship of some kind with a human (like Tracks and his buddy Raul).

Re: Favorite Characters Less Talked About
For G1 all my faves are unsung heros. I was never a fan of most of the big names (ok, as a kid I liked dinobots, gestalts, city bots, and wreck gar, but things changed after that).
G1: Swindle, Cyclonus, Octane, Astrotrain, Deadend, Kickback, Shrapnel, Bombshell, Slingshot. Odd how most of my favorites are decepticons.
though not faves I must give nods of appreciation to sideswipe, tracks, cosmos (the few times he is not in space, in space he can be boring), perceptor, and the sharkticons and junkions for making me see them in a favorable light still. And I do agree with those who said thrust was the coolest looking seeker, but that was not enough to put him on my list.
BW: Though I liked almost all the BW characters and most get respect so it is tough to call ANY unsung, i must say rattrap and waspinator make it to my faves list too.
BM: Jetstorm and rattrap (even with the boost to his cowardiceand bizarre weapons fixation). In a series that as a whole is unsung jetstorm stands out as cool.
My watching of series after BM is spotty (seeing one armada, 3 energon, 3 cybertron, and somehow missing RID completely) and the only character to impress me in them is ransack.

Hound is a bot i always liked, never got a lot of screen time really or comic time for that matter. Ijust think they could have expanded his character a bit more, especially with his fascination with earth.

Wildrider: I love that crazy son of bitch! Loudmouth, and just doesn't give a f.u.c.k!
Sideswipe: He looks and is cool!
Tracks: same as Sideswipe!
Brawl: Always wanting to pick a fight! Pissed off angry character!
Snarl: I love his powers!
Slingshot: He was cool jet.
Blurr: Super fast, the fastest Autobot land vehicle!
Sunstorm: He took down Omega Supreme!
Hound: He had the ability to project holograms!
Bombshell: His cerebro-shells makes him a great ally!
Shrapnel: Hes the robotic version of Electro
Kickback: Hes a gigantic grasshoppers!

I'd have to say Thundercracker, Skywarp, Sixshot, Blast Off, Swindle, Astrotrain, Blitzwing, and Breakdown. I wish we could have seen more of Breakdown's paranoia.

Yeah, everyone loves Skywarp, and quite right too. But for some reason he's never received the on-screen characterisation he deserves.
I'm gonna have to put Huffer high up on the list. I've always had a soft spot for the miserable little bugger, since it's largely his fault I'm here in the first place (that's 'here' as in 'part of the fandom'... he's not my dad...).
Although Jazz is one of the 'popular' characters, it really surprises me that he's not more popular. I don't think he gets anywhere near the love that he warrants - I'm baffled that for all the fangirls that Prime and Starscream get, Jazz has virtually nothing.
This guy is everything that James Bond wishes he could be, without a hint of the self-satisfied smugness that, frankly, he'd have every right to. The lad's a living legend.
Similarly, I think that Wheeljack, while somewhat popular, is often overlooked. Most people seem to look at him as 'another' technician character, forgetting that he's no dry scientist... he's a mad scientist, with an enormous sense of fun, and a real devil-may-care attitude. This guy blows nearly blows himself up with shocking regularity, and takes it all in his stride.
Beastbox and Squawktalk are characters I'd love to see developed more. What could seem at first glance to be fairly one-dimensional personalities, have a lot of room for interesting stories if looked at in the right way.
Wildrider just has enormous potential for fun. And for some reason, I can't help thinking he'd make a great double act with Vortex...
Bomb-Burst is another one who never gets much of a look-in, but given his uniqueness - the guy's basically a cybernetic vampire - I think he's worth a Spotlight.
