There are springs involved actually, its not quite that simple but not really that hard either, you just have to be careful.
There used to be a step by step instructional with pics somewhere on the net, I can't find it now. You may want to try a google search for it.

Don't open up the arm all the way and you don't have to sweat the springs. If I recall, I just popped the top couple of screws off and pried open enough space to do the swap

I don't see how you can avoid the springs all together as the springs are actually attached to the smokestacks via a small hook on the end of the spring, at least mine were.

Well, its been a loong time sicne I did this. However, I am not mechanically inclined at all. Trust me, I try and put together a desk, I end up with a speed boat. It irealy is that bad. So if I was able to do it in 5 min, it should be really simple.
However, now that I think of it, you are right, there were springs, since the stacks pivot. Still, as I said, I am a mechanical moron, so it should be really easy.

stacks
I ended up just taking the damn springs out. It doesn't really affect the figure at all. You just have to move them a little bit instead of them "springing" into place.
What Transformer are you? (Movie)

You are the weapon specialist. You are probably the only Autobot who doesn't give a crud about the humans and repeatedly asks permission to blow something up. You are very strong and big as well as always suggesting the BIGGER sort of weapon. You are also good at sports; mostly contact sports. You can be easily irritated and may have anger issues. You also have a huge truck mode. Sweet.

Yeah it was the springs that were getting me confused. actually they fell out.
I'll try putting them back, then sliding the new stack in and use a needle to guid ethe spring back into the stack, assuming the way i do it is correct. haha
I was just concerned that iw as pulling the shoulder assembly apart to far, wondered if there was an easier way to do it.
(I got the stacks off of ebay. $20 i think, got me a knock off masterpeice trailer too)

Nah, you gotta take them apart. I can't even remember if I left the springs in mine, they were rendered quite ineffective because the repro stacks are slightly larger than the originals.
