It would be difficult for a tank to fly through space unless he used a spaceship which was originally planned for the first movie but ultimately removed because of budgetary constraints so flying through space in a jet/spaceship form is easier.

Also, in the american G1 1986 movie he was his original gun mode, not a tank so unless you are referring to a different movie from another country then he was only a tank in G2 here that I'm aware of.

You saw how slow devasator was in the movie when he was a tank if megatron was a tank two the movie would be like 15-25 minute longer not to mention how long it would take for him to fly from cybertron to earth in a tank.

An anti-air cannon or similar big piece of artillery, sure enough. But no significant mass-shifting in the movie please. (I'm fine with Prime being 120% of what his truck mode could've allowed)

On the other hand, he could've been a handgun, heck even a Walther P-38, and transform into a bot with a maximum size of a Leader class toy. That would've made for an interesting Con leaderm =D

in the 2009 sequal, megatron would most likely become galvatron.

armada megatron was a tank

megatron is perfectly ok as a jet

Different continuities.

Megatron was a gun in G1, tank in G2, plane in MW, T-Rex in BW, Dragon in BM, tank in Armada, plane in Energon and car/plane in Cybertron.
