My first custom, Mrs. Devastator (Pic Heavy!!!)

Postby Wingsbr » Wed Sep 12, 2007 12:29 am

I wanted a fully green devy like the G1 version but I didn't really need 2 classics devy's. On the way home after buying the second one I had the idea to paint one for my fiancee. She is a princess for the ages and supports my tf collecting, listens to my rants about tf's and I can't wait to be married to her so I knew that my first custom should be for her. She really likes black and pink (wedding colors) and I knew the purple was a base for the original. So without further ado, I present Mrs Devastator!!!

I like it! In fact, I almost think there should be even a bit more pink, like maybe on the wheel rims or something, but that's just me. Very unique and cool looking.

Definately interesting. They individual figures that use the same molds could use some more diferenciation though. It would be cool if you could feminize them a bit structurally and not just with color. Overall though good work.

Tamiya Acrylics and sprays all the way. I sprayed the larger parts and handpainted the smaller ones...

I'm not sure, the can say Tamiya for plastics. I know it has acetone in it which helps the paint bond to the plastic at a molecular level. I let the sprays cure for one day between coats and then one week to set after the final coat. It's tough as nails.

Spray paints are enamels. Acetone is one of the solvents in enamels and as you said it breaks down plastics which allows the paint to bond with it. This can destroy plastics. IF you dip plastic in acetone, or pour acetone on plastic, it melts the plastic. THat his how it helps the paint molecularly bond to plastics, and that weakens the plastic itself, and over time, can destroy it.

Tramp! lay off the enamels man! You are continuously misleading people with urban legends and hear-say!

Some plastics will melt with acetone, not all. In fact, I am so sure because acetone comes in ....plastic bottles sometimes! what a miracle.

Yes, and the type of plastic used for those bottles is urethane, which acetone and enamels can't break down and bond with. That is why enamels won't cure on urethane. Acetone does break down ABS, acrylic, Buterate, and Styrene. This I have seen with my own eyes, and it is only these plastics that enamels can bond to and cure That is because the enamels bond by breaking these plastics down and molecularly bonding with them. That is how enamels cure.

I'm glad she liked it. I figured for the lady that my soon to be wifey is, she deserves the first custom. I have a few more ideas for her too but right now I'm working on my customs which I'll add in a week or so and yeah I got some pink paint leftover. :D

@ thorbot - There is a little piece that folds down on the devy head that has 2 pins in it that are right next to each other, you should be able to push that down and over to get devy's head center. I didn't realize that until I had to take one apart, hope this helps

@ tramp, frenzy_rumble - I think I could have been a little clearer so here goes. Tamiya paints have a "HINT" of acetone, just enough to get that paint to bond to the plastic, it's not heavy in acetone at all. Now I don't know a lot about styrene, urethane etc. but I do know that Tamiya paints are made for these uses and work great, it's not the only paint but it does a super job and the best IMHO.

I know that I'll get ripped for it, but Pink is a seriously underused colour in fan customs. When used sparingly (like on your Sledge figures) it's a great "highlight" colour.

Love the job, it looks very :CON:

Thank you for the compliment and that is definitely my way of thinking which is why this got the pink 'con treatment. I couldn't think of another set of colors that would have looked better while still keeping it very decepticon but being original at the same time.
