Obviously, thats probably not what they did. But it works.

Looks nice. I kinda want Rom, but that's it.
Why does Roadblock have mutton chops? His goatee is trademark!
Really hoping this isn't all we're getting. I demand a blinged out Trypticon!

This too. There's actually a lot more reasons than I thought.
Soundwave and Mainframe might have made more sense than Jetfire and Roadblock, but yeah, the TM gimmick would have been weird, and Soundwave's alt mode would have been wrong. Also, personally, I don't want TR Soundwave and I didn't get Generations Jetfire, so this makes me happy.
And comic accurate Matt Trakker! Now if only we could get Thunderhawk! That was one of the first toys I remember - I slept with it like it was a teddy bear.
Oddly, considering "Matt Trakker" was one of the first names I learned, just after "Mom", "Dad", and "He-Man" it didn't really phase me that they changed his racial background - as changes go, removing the single father aspect of his character seemed more significant...

Cool. I think the size, style, and significance work well for the set. Even the colors are of importance.

Almost ANYTHING would have been better - why the hell wasn't it Sunstorm or Acidstorm or something like that - Even Ghost Starscream?
Also a Visionary with no hologram offends me on a visceral level
I agree with the Jetfire thing but Sun & Acid aren't and haven't been major players in IDW.
I actually like the Visionaries look as he's more toon accurate that and the hologram technology and process is expensive for for toy companies and they look rubbish or fade over time.
All good but until IDW follow in DC and Mattel's book (with the Wally/Wallace Flash & ZodaC/K) they can keep the Matt Trakker.

I love absolutely everything about this set. A new Rom toy after almost 40 years! A Dire Wraith toy! Ian Noble Action Man! Tiny Micronauts!! Everything about this is awesome, amazing, wonderful, and I love it.

It's a nice idea, but I don't like the execution.
Is it just me or does that Roadblock remind anyone else of the Tranny's husband on It's Always Sunny?

I guess if people are concerned about Roadblock's comic book accuracy they could remove his head and replace it with the Dire Wraith's head? That would make it up to date, at least, right?

I'm shocked their is so much backlash against this gift set. No one is required to buy it. Let the people who like it or want it buy it. If it doesn't interest you, just save up your money for something else. It's as simple as that. I'm not buying it, because I only have an interest in the Transformers figures, and I already have the Takara Legends Jetfire figure. I'm not going to begrudge anyone else who may have need of any or all of this set just because I have no personal use for it.

I quite like it myself. ROM, Action Man and the Micronauts are just wonderful; and this is a great re-issue of Jetfire (with no chromed guns!!!!). Only real problem for me is that Roadblock doesn't have his awesome goatee, and I'm not overly fond of how that Dire Wraith is done even though I know what they're going for. I also don't really have much care for Leoric since Visionaries hasn't actually started yet in IDW -- though who knows, maybe it'll be even better than MTMTE and TAAO combined and I'll fall in love

Limitations of the mold aside, it's quite IDW in appearance.Kurona wrote:Also his inclusion over someone more important like, say, Optimus himself is likely because this toy is pretty much 100% accurate to his appearance in the IDW comics -- while Optimus unfortunately doesn't have and official toy besides maybe the Legends figure accurate to his current IDW appearance yet.
From what I was told, Hasbro wanted to get the Renegades Roadblock out somehow so collectors could complete the team. At the time it would be released Retaliation product would be on shelves so they came up with the idea of doing a two in one Roadblock figure. Unfortunately, Wal-Mart wasn't interested.

I don't tend to look at toys in terms of media compliance I just look at the CW Leader Seekers and at Jetfire and Sunstorm/Clone seekers/Acid Storm/ Bitstream / Actionmaster Thundercracker / Redwing etc.. is where I see a possible collection gap that needs filling in.
I was helping a lady at a car bootsale sort her adult son's Visionaries accessories and they all looked perfect - not fading at all - but I have seen some Supernaturals that look very hard to see the holograms on them - they go all dark and hard to make out.
Not had that issue with Visionaries though on either mine or ones I've seen personally. even a really badly age faded one I got once for parts still had a perfect hologram on it and that had been stored somewhere nasty for sure or got a lot of sun exposure.
It is fair I guess to make out that they didn't always draw the staff and chest logos in super detail on the cartoon.
As for the idea of the Micronauts being sold in their own set (which I think they should have been) they'd have been great in a sarcophagus or two.
It might have been nice to figure out if any existing MASK outfits match the look of any of the available Gi Joe moulds - something like Vintage Matt Trakker's Rhino outfit would have been a nice follow up for the Thunderhawk outfit they'd already made - as would a classic style Miles Mayhem. Anyone they had not drastically changed would have been a less controversial inclusion though (if such a thing has happened - and they didn't just randomly change everyone in M.A.S.K.)
If you wanted to do that then surely M.A.S.K. The Next Generation is what they need to be thinking of instead. Strange choice though keep the vintage vehicles and change the people or person instead.

Shame Jetfire doesn't have a X-14 Skystriker Deco - I wonder if Toyhax can be arm twisted into doing that with labels ?

Lame set with boring Jetfire, trendy diversity-tickbox Trakker, silly looking RoadBURNS, bland Action Man and a Visionaries leader lacking the entire gimmick of the toyline he's from (although the cartoon style replacement of the hologram isn't bad looking it's just not got the same nostalgia level). Also it terrifies me somewhat cos I'd rather IDW not touch Visionaries at all.

Matt Trakker hasn't worn that outfit yet, as far as I know. He didn't wear it in the Revolution Comic, for sure. (Which given it's a Revolution box set released at a Comic convention, does matter.)
As would a classic style Miles Mayhem.
Unlike the others, Miles doesn't wear body armor, only his mask, so Miles looks exactly the same as he always has (in his blue military uniform).
Anyone they had not drastically changed would have been a less controversial inclusion though (if such a thing has happened - and they didn't just randomly change everyone in M.A.S.K.)
Except for Matt Trakker being African American, everyone looks the way I remember them looking (less '80s, I guess). As far as any other changes (e.g., the absence of Scott Trakker, T-Bob, and over half the adult characters) this is set at M.A.S.K.'s creation, so the crew is small and young - the changes haven't been random, they've been in-keeping with that.
As far as Matt Trakker's race being changed, it really hasn't been relevant in the comics yet, even with his main antagonist being a patronizing old white guy. Even so, I've appreciated the change because besides being the team leader, they've been emphasizing Matt's technical and scientific acumen and passion. African American men in comics seldom get to lead a team for very long, and they're seldom depicted as shy, self-doubting science nerds, so I've appreciated the variety, even if it has been purely an aesthetic change.
If you wanted to do that then surely M.A.S.K. The Next Generation is what they need to be thinking of instead.
The series kicked off with the formation of M.A.S.K. as a program associated with GIJoe using Cybertronian tech and Ore 13. I'm sure IDW didn't want to mess with retconning *another* property into the combined universe (merging GIJoe into Transformers was a feat, I'm sure). And I doubt they wanted to build a new series as a sequel to something that hasn't been around for a very long time.
For perspective, Star Trek (The Original Series) ended in 1969 and Star Trek: The Next Generation began in 1987 - that was an eighteen year gap, but it was filled with syndicated airings and movies. M.A.S.K. ran from 1985 to 1988, and didn't see shelves again until 2016. Three additional Star Trek series lived and died during M.A.S.K.'s absence.
Strange choice though keep the vintage vehicles and change the people or person instead.
Most of the vehicles don't look distinctly vintage - Condor, for example, looks like a generic motorcycle, and Switchblade doesn't look like any sort of real world helicopter at all. Both are basically unchanged from their original versions. The more distinctly vintage style vehicles appear as prototypes used during R&D and training, with some of them (e.g., Trans Am Thunderhawk) sometimes visible under tarps in background shots, and some of them (e.g., Rhino) destroyed in testing. The Thunderhawk Trakker uses in the in the present looks more like a beefed up 2010s Camaro. (Venom's vehicles tend to lean more obviously vintage, though.)
Interestingly this page makes a bigger deal of the character nicknames/code names that is usually the case - though they do come up sometimes such as with 'Bruno Mad Dog Sheppard', Lester The Lizard Sludge, 'Chief' or 'Clutch'
For IDW's part, they've been sticking to the code names pretty hard as part of the tie in with GIJoe, where codenames have been part of the gimmick for decades. That said, their codenames/call-signs/handles come from their masks, which they still call by those names, so that sometimes gets weird. On the other hand, since military style radio lingo has them talking in the third person for clarity during operations anyway, it's usually not that strange.

I will say, just generally, Hasbro missed the boat not getting a new M.A.S.K. toy line out concurrent with Titans Return. If they had created new toys and scaled the mini figs to be Titan Master size... hotcakes man.
Actually, a line of GIJOES like that wouldn't be bad either.

That seems overly harsh. A simple 'I don't think this set looks like something I'd like' woulda sufficed. Which goes for a lot of the negativity. Jeez.
That being said...I do really like the look of this set. Glad to see the re-release of Jetfire, good for fans that missed getting him, though it does feel a tad random a Transformers. Whatever, it's fine. The Micros are a nice touch, too.
Now, damn you Hasbro for making this set too far outta my price range!
