Meh not a huge fan of beast wars so this is an easy pass. I agree with Will that this looks more like a generations figure than a masterpiece.

They could have hidden the elbow hinges in ape mode better, but as for robot mode accuracy, i think he's pretty much perfect

I'd also say that the already released MP figures aren't perfectly accurate eiter, taking liberties in bot mode, alt mode, or both.
In that sense, Primal is just as much a Masterpiece as the other ones.

This all gets to the question of 'what's an MP?' or 'what characteristics define an MP?' or even 'what's the platonic ideal?'
For characters with licensed vehicle modes, the answer is easier - slavish vehicle modes, compromises in bot mode where needed. With Optimus Primal, the compromise is in the alt mode... which is a weird inversion of our normal expectations when it comes to Masterpiece figures.
Either way, I think it's way too early to pass judgment on this one.

Early indeed.
First reaction is, this cartoon accuracy rampage is driving me nuts. The ape mode looks bad. He's an animal, not a computer model from 1994. He should have fur! Not this smooth CG rendered finish.
The bot mode looks great though! I will anxiously await more information.

I can hop onboard the Primal bandwagon. Nice looking render. Cannot wait to see some more stuff down the line!

He looks pretty good for an early render. The one shown at the toy show was just a statue not an actual working figure. Wonder how they will scale him? If he is kept in scale with the rest of the masterpiece figures then he would be about the same size as the LG-02 Primal figure. If thats the case then why make him in masterpiece as that, Gen. Rattrap and Rhinox are already fairly in scale with masterpiece. When Primal took Prime's spark and held it, he was about shin height to him.

For an early render this doesn't look too bad. The gorilla does look a bit awkward, the feet were the first thing I noticed as off, but most of the Beast Wars toys had robot kibble showing somewhere so it doesn't bother me that much. This could very well be my first Masterpiece figure, I kind of hope it's around the same height as a Generations Voyager (something close to Combiner Wars Optimus/Motormaster, a little bit taller than Masterpiece Bumblebee would be perfect), but I get the feeling it will be closer in height to Masterpiece Prowl or Wheeljack.

Why? That's what's driven me away from all of his releases thus far, is that the beast mode head never looked like the character I grew up loving... the MP line has always been about cartoon accuracy where needed, and where else would it be needed than in giving him his iconic cartoon head model. If you want a 'realistic' o/p get any of the standard releases, as they probably fit the bill better

It looks like they're trying to make this toy's Beast Mode able to both realistically bend over on all fours (as Primal did in the show when he wanted to walk or run) and unrealistically stand upright (as Primal also did in the show went he was just standing around).

Just like they did for rattrap; which is fair, as that's how they spent the bulk of their time in beast mode; imagine if they tried to do terrorsaur, what an engineering mess he would yield

Maybe this rendering hasn't hit the texturing phase. I don't know. Plus I don't mind that his sculpt looks like the cartoon. I just think he needs some depth.
Trust me. I REALLY want to love this thing. And so like I said, I will anxiously wait to see what happens and keep a positive outlook.

That's just me. I get the whole Toon Acc thing, but I feel like Masterpiece should mean a better toy than it's predecessors. IMO a better toy would mean a more realistic beast mode. Not a gorilla with an inter tube stretched over his bones.

I mentioned this before, but they can't 'improve' the figure; he and megs were perfect (nearly in megs' case - need that hand); I never had a chance to gt o/p toy as a kid, so all I had was the show...
Besides, TT is being cartoon accurate, just as the mp line does, buttflaps, aprons, and all...
Wonder if he'll have a flip-up mouthplate

Because Rhinox had a ton of things about his toy that were completely inaccurate to the cartoon model, chief among them being his beast mode looking more like a real rhinoceros than the more cartoony look of the CG model, along with several aspects of his robot mode being inaccurate to the CG model's robot mode.william-james88 wrote:Yeah, the engineering seems more like an update than really a Masterpiece figure. I dont see how RHinox is generations and this is an MP, aside from size.
Aside from the original 1996 Ultra class Optimus Primal mold, Generations Rattrap is in scale with no one.Moonshot wrote:Gen. Rattrap and Rhinox are already fairly in scale with masterpiece.

In regards to texture/smoothness, the CGI model did have a furry texture:

It was just that his fur happened to always be extremely well-groomed.

The fur may be a manufacturing/ cost thing. It's a high end collectible yes, but still mass produced

That's a weak excuse, they could mold more fur on the mp figure, the show version only had that because of cg constraints...

My point is that the show model did have fur and wasn't as solidly smooth-surfaced as this unfinished render looks.Hellscream9999 wrote:Sabrblade wrote:In regards to texture/smoothness, the CGI model did have a furry texture:
It was just that his fur happened to always be extremely well-groomed.
That's a weak excuse, they could mold more fur on the mp figure, the show version only had that because of cg constraints...
