Toy sizes and Grimlock

Postby er4smiths » Sat Dec 08, 2007 11:00 pm

#1 - I love the new movie toyline since most of them are similar to what they look like in the movie. The sizes are more comparable to the movie as well. One thing I've never understood is why they don't try and get it exact and still keep the integrity of the original G1 cartoon series? Why can't they scale everything the same, i.e. 1/25?
Would Optimus be taller than Blackout in real size? Why did they make deluxe class of vehicles that would be much bigger than even some of the voyager class? I would be very interested to hear everyone's thoughts.

#2 - Will they EVER get Grimlock right? The G-1 figure is probably the best - but not size wise. The Classics version is horrible in my humble opinion. It looks so bad in robot mode. It looks NOTHING like the cartoon. I almost want to call Hasbro and beg them to get the look and size right and re-release the classics figure or at least get it right if it comes out in the movie line. Grimlock should be at least as tall as the Leaders like Prime and Megatron.

1- If Hasbro made all the figures to scale, then all the Decepticons would have to be leader or at leasy Voyager size (barring Barricade). Obviously, then parents wouldn't but them for their kids because they're too expensive. If you'll notice, each faction in the movie translates into one leader class, two voyagers and two/three deluxe figures as toys.

2- The Classics aren't all faithful recreations of G1 figures. Optimus and Megatron resemble their G1 counerparts just as much as Grimlock did. While admittedly he isn't perfect, if they had just tried to make a more poseable G1 figure it wouldn't have worked. See the Energon Grimlock figure and you'll see what I mean.

For the TFTM toys, I think it would be cool to see all the cars, trucks, jets, boats (Anything with a motor) be built in 1:24 scale, and any of the fictional types (like a dinobots and protoforms) be built in a bigger scale or kept the same size as a voyager class.

That would make the car-sized figures Voyager size. Optimus Prime and Megatron would be AT LEAST $80! The jets, at that scale, wouldn't fit inside a living room.

Ok let me put it this way: If a jet(starscream) in real life transformed into a robot and a semi(prime) did the same - what would be their respected heights? which would be taller?

any logical guesses?

also if all the toys were 1:24 size scale - what would be the difference in the sizes of the figures? Are Prime and Ironhide close to right?

I don't know the exact numbers, but let me try to give you something to visualize it for you: A semi is twice the size of a truck. A normal-size car isn't even as big as a Raptor's nosecone.

I've to agree. And one thing: while I like Classics, I can't help but feel that original transformation process was so cool and unpredictable. I mean, the T rex legs becoming the arms... who'dve thunk? I liked my G1 Grimlock because it transformed just like in the cartoon.

The Classics is very nice, I like that it can be posed the way modern T rex posture is reconstructed, but the transformation process is just too predictable.

G1 Grimlock is utterly wrong with its spinesnapping posture. No dinosaur could walk that upright.

Kudos to the magnificent Classics Grimlock for getting it right. And adding a nicely complicated transformation and a great paint wash.

scale

Postby Agent 007 » Sun Dec 09, 2007 3:29 pm

I would say that Screamer in real life would be around 30-35ft tall, now a semi is way smaller, but Prime has a lot of parts and long legs so he's around 28-32tf tall. In scale tfs would be nice, but as it's been said before, the cost would be way too much.
