Transformer movie toys the good and the bad

Postby Omega Kcorb » Sat Dec 01, 2007 8:09 pm

I am a long term fan and have visited SEIBERTON for a very long time. I finally joined because I want some serious opinions about the movie toys. I know they are not G1 as what I grew up with but I recently purchased an Ironhide(sorry please do not pick no markings on the box, but it is the one with the large canons under neath the truck form). I am very disappointed with it in Robot mode. Very flimsy and unplayable with. I am not a kid but come on I would like to mess with it without having all kind of problems or braking. I am sure the collectors would like the leader class versions or the uber Bumble Bee. But, finally my question is to everyone what is considered for all the Transformer movie toys to be the most functional, playable, and best looking in both modes? This could be a good thread for everyone.

I was going to say Ironhide... :-(

He is, in my opinion, one of the coolest toys ever made.

But Ratchet is another fantastic movie toy (either version if you like the G1 paint too). I have them both. Ratchet is very much sturdy and playable in both modes. Starscream, Leader Megs, Leader Optimus, Jazz, Bonecrusher, both Deluxe Bumblebees, and Scorponok are all solid figures. Barricade is a but flimsy, as is Blackout and deluxe Brawl.

Hope that helps a bit.

I collect and I do not have the Leader class figures or Ult. Bumblebee. I just have the Voyager and Deluxe figures. I think that Ironhide is pretty cool. Ratchet as mentioned before is very sturdy. Autobot Jazz can be a tad delicate, particularly with his arms but they fixed that with the G1 repaint. The Final Battle Jazz comes with a much better weapon, which I gave to my silver Autobot Jazz.

Anyways, welcome to Seibertron.

Honestly, most of the leader, voyager, and deluxe classes are more collector's items that ought to be displayed and periodically transformed rather than consistently played with, IMO. I would shudder to give to a child any of the leader figures, Voyager Ironhide and Blackout, and the more intricate deluxes, like both Bumblebees, Brawl, and Barricade. Not only would they easily be ripped apart, but if the kid tried to transform any of these from robot and back, he/she would quickly be frustrated.

The Fast Action Battlers I think really were intended more for kids with their more basic designs and thicker plastic, though Hasbro never really made a clear distinction. I think Voyager Megs, Prime, and Ratchet are sturdy enough to qualify as toys that can take a beating and Jazz and a few other deluxes are equally bulky enough for abuse, but again, I doubt a child would be doing a great deal of "transforming" with most of these figures unless the kid is highly astute and patient(maybe kids are different today, I dunno.)

Personally, I have loved the movie line and have few qualms about it. I'm not really sure what you mean when it comes to *functionality* when it comes to certain toys, but I will give you my Top 5 overall in the line;

1. Leader Prime
2. Concept Camaro Bumblebee
3. Leader Brawl
4. Voyager Ironhide
5. Deluxe Bonecrusher

Honorable mention: Voyager Ratchet, Voyager Thundercracker(just looks better than Starscream, IMO), deluxe Barricade. A few of the non-movie characters, like Wreckage and Dropkick are also worth your money if you like the above.

Welcome to Seibertron.

Ironhide is pretty sweet, although like you said, quite flimsy. When compared to the other lines, the movie line has really weak plastic, but its very, very, very movie-accurate.

So to answer your question, most of the movie toys are for looks

The only figure I want to get is Meantime... and that was only after someone on Flickr suggested I google: JIN SAOTOME MEANTIME CUSTOM.

The rest of these movie figures... they just need to go away and never be seen. I can't wait till the animated series figures pushes the movie monstrosities off the shelf and I can buy Transformers again.

Welcome to the forums Omega Kcorb!

The best figures for me are Leader Class Prime and Concept BB. All solid figures for me and I like it that they are the Movie's main Autobots.

Don't forget Dropkick, kiddies! He's one of the best Deluxes next to '09 BB. I actually don't appreciate '09 BB as much as others, because I have lots of problems making him stand...but that's another topic. :-?

Anyway, Dropkick is a very sturdy figure, and is fun transforming. I'd recommend this fig to anybody. No major kibble. No missiles that will be easily lost. No pieces that can break off easily (save for the "sticks" near his head).

As for Voyager, I'm in love with Thundercracker. His head mold, the color scheme, the transformation, make him a cool fig. Other than him not having hands, he's great. I'm probably not the right person to go to for Voyagers, though. I've had a hard time finding ANY.

Leader class goes to Prime, hands down. The thing I love most about him is his alt. mode. It's TOO movie accurate. Then of course, he has the posable fingers, and very articulated legs. So much fun posing.

Well, there's my humble opinion on the "best of each class".

I'm not to keen to the movie figures. I like the way Arcee and Bumblebee look in the packaging. But I think the transformations are a bit complex. Sure you can remember how to transform them, but it's alot of steps that you have to take.

Ironhide FTW. Ratchet comes in a close second for its sturdiness. Starscream for the Decepticons, followed by Bonecrusher and Voyager (Metallic exclusive) Megs. Longarm for honorable mention.

LC OP's got electronics that doesn't sound right (compared to the previous Armada/ Energon/ Cybertron releases). plus he's got all those kibble on his back and the back of his legs that limit his poseability. that's why i'm not getting the LC Megs or Brawl, nor any other Movie leader class releases in the future.

BB's way overhyped, and i'm glad i got mine during the very first wave of movie releases thus sparing me from the scalper/hoarder troubles here (yes, even here there are scalpers. word.). in fact, i got 3, but sold the other 2 off because the hype soon waned on me. i also got disgusted by the inflated-price market value it gained on eBay.ph, with unscrupulous sellers selling it for 2x-3x it's actual price.

Jazz...hmmm, if he wasn't a HTF figure nowadays i woulda rated him higher, but i wonder why did they ever shortpack him when he's not fairly remarkable, with the ugly forearms and such.

Arcee? very flimsy plastic. if not for it's uber-cool bike mode this toy is meh. of course, i hadn't actually broken mine or stressed any part, but the plastic feels quite cheap for the price point.

i used to collect Decepticons but sold 'em unopened, i dunno, i decided not to go completist on this line (though i could have), just buy the ones i really liked. IMHO the movie line is the worst line to go for completists and openers; once you're used to the previous TF lines, the poor QC and complicated transformations (not to mention the unreliable automorph) of the Movie line will really get into your nerves.

but that's just my opinion, if you want advice then just go buy the ones you like; what i didn't like might not necessarily mean that you won't like them also. 8)

Movie line is quite nice. I think Automorph is a good effort, making the abilities of the toys within themselves, instead of being activated by something external.

not to say combining or cyber keys are bad though.
