Unleash the Beast Wars! The Beast Wars Toys Appreciation Thread
Re: Unleash the Beast Wars! The Beast Wars Toys Appreciation Thread

I remember after finding that Primal and researching what Beast Wars was I went to TRU and found some of the toys. This was in late 97 or early 98 so it must have been season 2 figures. I remember seeing a gigantic Cheetor on the shelf, along with a few others. But they didn't appeal to me so I never got any of them. Maybe I should have.

No no, you made a good decision there.
BM Supreme Cheetor is ****. It serves one purpose and that's to terrify your own cat, but even then, G1 Trypticon walking does a better job of that.

BM Supreme Cheetor was an embarrassing first outing for the Supreme size class and one of the worst shelfwarmers of all time. And yet Hasbro still didn't learn not to make stupidly oversize toys of the little yellow kid-appeal guy
IIRC Cybertron Supreme-class Starscream was also a shelfwarmer early on because of being stupidly oversize when the line launched; nobody wanted him until Screamer became a giant in the show.

In all fairness, all the BM Cheetor figures sucked. Night Slash Cheetor gave it his all, but in the end, you're better off super-gluing all the joints together if you want them boys to stand up by themselves.

You know I never really thought of Cheetor as the "yellow kid-appeal guy." To me he was the Hot Rod of Beast Wars not the Bumblebee. But I guess that makes sense as well.

Having messed with the figures I got today, I gotta say I really like King Starscream. I love the massive jet, and the transformation is so meaty and fun at this size. He's great fun!

Well, they're not always yellow. Hound was originally featured as the kid-appeal character before Bumblebee took up that position (I think Bee's cheaper price played a role). Hot Rod was a kid-appeal character too, during the movie, before he became a Prime and the "kid appeal" torch got passed to Wheelie. In RiD, the role was split between Wedge (orange) and Side Burn (blue). In Energon, the kid appeal character was the red, blue, and ochre Ironhide and in Cybertron it was Jolt (red, white, and black) and to a lesser degree Scattorshot (blue and ochre).Rodimus Prime wrote:You know I never really thought of Cheetor as the "yellow kid-appeal guy." He is, but dear Primus could he have done with having butterfly joints, bicep swivels, and wrist swivels added to the design. Especially the butterfly joints.D-Maximal_Primal wrote:Having messed with the figures I got today, I gotta say I really like King Starscream. He really is. If he had wrist rotation he'd be golden, but even without it he delights.D-Maximal_Primal wrote:Also, Scourge is a wonderful monster
That's getting a bit off-topic though, but it does bring something to mind..
What do people here think of the 10th Anniversary Megatron mold?

I mentioned Cybertron Screamer in relation to Supreme Cheetor, as an example of another oversize toy that nobody wanted in because he was too big(at least until the show justified the size).

Personally when I was younger, I thought Rattrap was supposed to be the "kid appeal" character, he was the funny one. Cheetor was the liability. The one who mostly screwed up at any given mission and needed to be rescued. In an 80's cartoon, he would have been the subject of the Moral Lesson.
As for [TM 2] Scourge, although I only bought him for the first time last year, he is already one of my all time favourites. I currently own two now. For the Plague aesthetic I am looking for, I aim to source six of him in due course.

Although not strictly an MP thread, on an appreciation side alone...

At least on the Maximal side, the line is looking strong!

Indeed. As the MP line stands (when Tigatron is released) We'll have Four Maximals (six inclusive of two Primal redecos) and Two Predacons (three inclusive of Shadow Panther). Obviously we all know Japan has that weird slant towards heroes over villains, but Season One does have an equal number of Maxi's and Preds. So it will right itself eventually, regardless of bias.
Whereas I'm only really interested in one of the remaining Maximals (Rhinox, my favourite), some of the Predacons are much more anticipated EG Terrorsaur and Inferno.

Terrorsaur will be a good one to see how they work him given his relative size and alt mode

The challenge with Terrorsaur will be that his altmode is basically flat, his Bot Mode (in particular his shoulders and arms) is not. Plus his Beast Mode was never quite anatomically accurate. But at least he should be the size of a voyager this time, not basic...

With Tigatron being a new mold, I am hopeful Tarantulas now will be too. Hopefully fixing the problems of BA's mediocre Beast Mode in the process.

Considering how essential he ended up being to the overall story (a Tripredacus council agent) I'd say he's a high profile character deserving of recognition. Plus, he was the show's Soundwave homage, and I don't think I've ever seen a good toy for him.AllNewSuperRobot wrote:Rodimus Prime wrote:I hope we get a MP Tarantulas before any other BW character.

Indeed. If he were a Maximal (or had Robo-boobs) he would have been in the MP line already.

Controversial. Given myself and others have noted TM Tarantulas is one of the best figures in the entire line.

If I had just one complaint with Transmetals Tarantulas, it's just his robot mode hands, but other than that I love him, especially his cycle mode. His redeco is especially slick.
I also think that story wise, he would have benefited from a TM2 mode, one that resembled his twisted mind (plus spiders and TM2 ascetic, can't tell me that BA tm2 was all they could think of)

They were better hands than his base form Peg Holes, that held his gun.

To be honest, even though it was an improvement over his original toy, Tarantulas was one of the "weird hand" Transmetals though. Alongside Cheetor and Inferno/Scavenger.

Don't besmirch Scavengers drill hands!
in my head cannon, I used his beast mode legs as manipulators. I imagined him accessing multiple computers at once or one computer really quickly like the guy in the first ghost in the Shell movie where his hands transformed

In my head canon, Scavengers hands are large pincers. The drills and mandibles of the Ant head, in tandem.
