What about reformulation of the plastic? Could that be a cause for the lighter weight?

Also, there's a budget in any given size class not only for amount of plastic, but also number of moving parts. IIRC, if they increase the number of parts, they have to decrease the amount of plastic. Now compare the number of moving parts in a typical DOTM deluxe and a typical Armada or Energon deluxe...

EDIT: Let's have someone willing to try an experiment do this:

1 ) Take a very large pot, and fill it about halfway with water. Using a thin dowell, push and hold an Armada or Energon Deluxe under the water until all the air bubbles stop and it's completely filled with water. Now note where the water level is. This will give the total VOLUME of plastic (as opposed to weight or mass).

2 ) Repeat in the same pot with the same amount of water with a DOTM Deluxe. Note where the water level is.

If the difference is significant... well, shoot. If it's not, they may have switched to a lighter plastic with the same or similar volume.

Researched that too.

DOTM figures use Type 3 ABS which is lighter and not as strong as older figures.

Unicron Trilogy and a good part of the early movie stuff is made of Type 1 or 2 ABS. Type 1 or 2 was determined by joint locations. Anyways, Type 1 and 2, is significantly stronger than the type 3.

AEC figures just based on looks will push the water level up more than DOTM. Just hold Cybertron Hotshot and then compare it's size and weight to DOTM Roadbuster.

Looks can be deceiving. A lot of parts are two halves screwed or otherwise joined together with hollow space between, and it's the size of the hollow space that would really affect this experiment.
