What is Confirmation?

Postby Transformation619 » Sun Nov 04, 2007 9:58 pm

Well, i got chaticism classes, and teacher says i have to continue this until i get confirmation but what exactly is it? I think you, Cyber bishop would maybe know about this...

Chaticism= It's like a class to learn about god and god's history such as, Adam and Eve, Noah's ark and Jesus.

Confirmation is one of the seven sacraments and basically is the ceremony where you are annointed with holy oil (annointed by the Holy Spirit) and are from then on considered an adult member of the church (this is Catholicism we're talking about here right?). It usually is given around 13-14 and/or when one's fundamental religious studies are completed. That's just a basic rundown.

For those reading who are not Catholic, please don't be offended, I'm just answering the question. ^_^

Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 1302-1303:

It is evident from its celebration that the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.
From this fact, Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace:
- it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation which makes us cry, "Abba! Father!" (Romans 8:15);
- it unites us more firmly to Christ;
- it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us;
- it renders our bond with the Church more perfect;
- it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross:

Recall then that you have received the spiritual seal, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence, the spirit of holy fear in God's presence. Guard what you have received. God the Father has marked you with his sign; Christ the Lord has confirmed you and has placed his pledge, the Spirit, in your hearts.

Sounds like a bunch of made up hogwash to me, but it's essentially you telling the Church you're in for good. Luckily, I opted out before then.

EDIT: Really nothing to offend.
