Which G1 dinobot should I get?

Postby Ironhider » Sat Nov 10, 2007 12:44 pm

My grandma said she'd buy me any G1 dinobot I want. Which one should I get? I was thinking maybe Swoop, Snarl or Grimlock. I saw a two pack containing Snarl and Sludge but his dumb background kinda turns me off.

Weapon: Air Rifle
Go for the twopack. They are all cool figures, so why not get two at once to start your dinobot collection?

The valuable and popular one is obviously Grimlock, but I'd also recommend Swoop. At least his transformation doesn't leave him with huge, fat legs like Sludge or... *shudder*... Slag. I also think the underrated Snarl is a good choice. Here's a nice photo collection:

im a bit confused here, G1 dinobot 2 packs? grandma! hey, we went back in time??

the dinos are amongst my favourite toys period well aside from swoop who i really dont care for. Slag is at the bottom of a still great pile, he barely changes from dino to robo mode, grimmers, sludge and snarl have intuitive ingenious transformations and great chunky robot modes, my favourite, that is tricky but sludge and grimlock swap top position week by week!

You're kidding, right? They're basically no different from the lie-the-robot-on-its-stomach-and-fold-the-legs-up transformation from the 932'874 other G1 Transformers. You'd think that the unique form of each Dinobot would beget an equally unique transformation, but no. I mean, the designer couldn't even make the sensible decision of reversing the relative position of the head and tail for Grimlock, Sludge and Slag like for the more correctly proportioned Classics Grimlock. Ingenious transformation, my arse.

I've got them all, and I'd recommend Snarl. He's great in both modes. Grimlock's head is a bit far back in robot mode, but he'd be my second choice...

I'd say Snarl.. Personally I like that his tail turns into those mean looking sharp thorny thingys on his back.. Also Snarl was my first transformer ever..

I would have to say Grimlock. His teeth are sharp enough to rip through paper. :O

sludge is da best overall.
decent alt. mode (working jaws)
decent bot mode
decent transformation
not fragile like some of the other ones.

his only major minus is that he doesn't stand out.
which is not bad compared to the others.

You seem to be new at G1 transformers [if I'm wrong I'm sorry] I just thought you should be warned.......there were no G1 Dinobot two packs ever released by Hasbro.

Now if you ment that a seller is selling two figures you should also take care.....there have been a hudge grouth in the amount of Knock off G1 Dinobot Transformers as of late.Chances are they may not be the real deal.

Swoop is the rarest of all 5 of the Dinobots and I have seen some auctions for a offical one go as high as $300. usd.
The reason is because Swoop's beak was very week and would offthen break from little presher.

If you have friends that know a lot about collecting Transformers you should get their opinion before buying any of them....if you dont post a link to the auctions in question....most of the guys here know how to spot a fake so we could all lend a helping hand.

i kid not.

these are ex diaclone toys so were designed before transformers were ever even imagined so your point of them being the same as all the others is poorly argued, the others were the same as them!

Koizin ohno who did these also designed many other ingenious now seen as classic toys eg jazz/blitzwing, i suggest that man has/had a very strong grasp on good design.

So these designs are around 25 years old, created with the toy technology and more limited influences of the time, they are great examples of a blend of simplicity (for kids), fun looking beast and robot modes with a degree of 'personality' and still manage to remain as fairly tough toys. The transformations back then were ingenious and still are. I'll say that a new toy like masterpiece megatron is more ingenious but unlike the dinobots that thing can fall to pieces even in the hands of a colletor (and id argue that the G1 megatron is far more satisfying to transform than the 20 minutes for masterpiece). Combining aesthetics and playability into one is a tough task.

your praise of clssics grimlocks proportions is fine but we are seeing here a toy with 25 years of technology astride of g1 grimlock, despite this im not sure that classics grimlock will ever be seen as a toy classic in the future, its a rather clumsy looking robot whos upper and lower halves just dont match, the rather odd disproportion (really only applies to grimlocks skinny thighs and back kibble) of the g1 toy/s added to their charm but the figures overall have a very balanced look. Good design and artistry will always override the technology that should constrain it. Videogames are a good example, a golden oldie like galaga eclipses most modern video games, its apparent simplicity belies its ability to make a person sit at the TV for hours in a sweat.

heres to ohno and his amazing dinobots!

True on all ot that but the main reason for Swoop being the rarest is that he was never realsed in the UK and maybe the rest of Europe!

To be honest, get them all!

The Dinobots are all very fun and unique figures, but if you have tho choose(and I can't pin there names rightt now, still having coffee) go for either the triceratops, or the brontusaurus.

Grimlock is a given, but those 2 are slot of fun

-------------------------------------------------

Also, I just searched ebay for a 2pack of dinobots. I saw the Armada set, and some figures paired up, but no actual 2 pack?

Still, this is kinda familiar to me so I ask, first off for links, then second was the package red with a white grid and die cut openings showing the bots?

Just select the ebay page by holding the mouse left click and scrolling over all the letters. Once you are done let go of the left click and press the right click. A menu should show up. Scroll down to the part that says copy and select it by left clicking it. Then on your messege right click so the menu shows up and left click on paste. Then post it. We can then do the same. You'll notice though that a url button is on the post a reply screen. You can copy the link and paste it in the space provided so that we can click a link to it.

AS far as Dinobots are concerned, I'd of coarse go with Grimlock or Swoop. I all of the Dinobots except Snarl which is one that I really want.
