G1 as a kid, but the movie sucked me back in. Next, I soon realized how awesome transformers had been for the previous 5 years, so I went back and pretty much got all of Cybertron, Energon, some Armada ... All Alts/BT/BTA/KP.
Now, I'm waiting on an MISB Macross Valkyrie VF-1S w/ super packs, which I'm going to repaint into MP Jetfire.

Re: Which Series Did It For You?
I collected G1 transformers as a kid (I was 10 in '86, so I hit the sweet spot), but lost all interest as soon as I "outgrew toys".
It was the movie toys (and the movie itself) that reawakened my love for TFs.
I started collecting this past fall/winter, and it was timing more than anything. I was growing bored with video games, I had extra money thanks to a big XMas bonus at work, and the coming of winter had me looking for something to cheer me up. Getting one or two TFs in the mail every week got me through the winter doldrums.

Re: Which Series Did It For You?
I loved G1 as a kid. Watched the cartoon religiously and collected both the UK and US comics. I still have quite a few of my original G1 toys, although I made the mistake of selling a lot of them a number of years ago. I stopped collecting towards the end of G1 -- just before Actionmasters hit, from memory.
Getting back into Transformers was a bit of an unexpected thing. I remember playing the PS2 Armada game and finding it thoroughly entertaining. It brought back fond memories of TFs from my childhood. I checked out what toys were available at the time and Energon had just hit the shelves -- the rest is history. I've been a solid collector since then and have most of the molds from Energon and onwards and also a few others (some RiD and G1 etc).
Mostly I can thank G1 and Energon for my addiction.

I had a pretty nice G1 collection when I was a kid, which I still have. I got out of TFs just before G2, when they got all big clunky and plastic-y. Around the time of Headmasters, targetmasters etc.
I really liked the Beast wars show, but was never into the figures.
I didn't ever get into RID or the A/E/C shows though, and thus never got into those figs.
I got back into collecting TFs with Alts. Talk about plastic crack!
If they didn't litter that line with so many, many, many repaints I think it would have lasted longer than it did. Then Classics hit, and I was re-hooked.
I've been going back and buying key pieces from the older lines that I missed.
While I didn't dig the shows, there were some real gems in those toy lines!

Re: Which Series Did It For You?
I was a kid during the 80's, so I grew up with G1 and had a few of the toys. I'm actually hoping at least some of them are still in my parents' loft - I had a G1 Menasor which I don't remember ever selling which I'd love to put on the shelf with some of my newer ones
I stopped collecting, as such, when I "outgrew toys"; I think my last TF at the time was Pretender Starscream.
Didn't see any of G2, and only caught one or two episodes of Beast Wars, I think on reruns. Working in a shop, I saw a lot of the Beast Wars & Transmetals figures, though, and they just didn't grab me. The idea just didn't make sense to me as far as my concept of Transformers went
Saw a few eps of Armada and thought it was silly, and the toys didn't look like realistic vehicles, so I passed on those, too.
I actually started collecting again just over a year ago with Boba Fett and ARC-170 from the SWTF lines, which I'd put off buying for ages because I'm "too old for toys". Since then I've picked up some Alternators, a few Classics and a lot of the movie line.
I think it was when I was carrying my first movie line figures home that I really considered myself as hooked again

Re: Which Series Did It For You?
Nobody will belive this, but it was Armada. That's right, you read correctly, Armada. After I saw the episode Credulous, I ran stright to my Target to pick up a Sideways figure as my first Transformer. Although I didn't collect much of the Armada line after I picked him up, that badass doublecrossing Headmaster got the ball rolling as I soon came across my friends BW video and It was off to eBay for me and the start of a new hobby.
