I grew up always remembering that toy and how badly I wanted it. Fast forward to late 06. A guy on the Evolution boards was selling about 10 of the Takara book reissues. I bought those completed the takara collection and have not looked back. Recently I have been buying Diaclones but they are wallet drainers. I collect because I have never stopped loving the toys. Plus it is alot of fun!

I can't even imagine how much $ those Diaclones are runnin ya, but hey you do what you love, right?!

I love how you said passion, that's something that you can't explain to someone who doesn't get what your passion is(TFs in this case).
They just won't understand, for most of us they're more than just toys.

Transformers is nostalgic for me.
I really enjoyed the G1 cartoons, and was lucky enough to have a couple of friends who had parents who could afford to buy them about everyone you could think of from whenever they came out through 1987.
My parents were not able to afford TF for me, and I only owned a few, and those weren't anything great by any means.

As I was growing up, a couple of what are now my main hobbies consumed a lot of my free time, and by middle school, all of my toys were put away.
It just kinda worked out that once the 2007 movie came out, I had a drumset I'm happy with, have decent enough soccer equipment, and have cut back on my partying enough so that my extra money could be channeled some where else.
Along with getting into long boarding, I used some extra money to start collecting Robot Heroes.
Then I found the Classics figures on ebay (unfortunately, I was too late to find them in stores), which by far are my favorites.
Once I had all of those that I wanted, I decided to start buying movie figs.

I think the main reason I collect is nostalgia.
Second, is probably because I never could have the figures I wanted to when I was growing up.
I got into long boarding because it's more active than playing drums, and waaay less intense than playing soccer.
Compared to all of that, collecting is a hobby that takes very little energy.
Oh, and yeah, and for being toys, they're pretty cool.

I had just about all the orginal G1s that came out on the American market between 1984 and 1988, and I sold all but maybe 20 of them over the years. The bulk of my collection went to support another habit I had aquired in college (not proud of it either, I might add). I am back buying as often as I can, but I am not going back and re-buying all my lost beloved G1s, since some of the figures that have come out since are a bit better and more "play-minded"...G1s were not known for their great articulation!

Back in 2005, I was pretty heavily into Gundam models and had been for about 4 or so years. Unfortunately, for a big part of 2005 and 2006 I was homeless...that is to say, my home was being converted into my business and my wife and I were forced to live in a spare room at my in-laws while our new condo was being finished. So, I was unable to continue my then-current passion/obsession.

During this time between homes, I did buy much of anything as I had no space to put it. However, one day we were out at a department store with my in-laws and sis-in-laws, when I decided to swing by the toy department to see what Gundams they had, which it turned was mostly over-priced crap or stuff I already had. On my way out, I noticed a wall of Transformers and thought to myself "Wow...I didn't know those were still around." I went over to take a closer look and about 90% of it was Cybertron stuff, which didn't appeal to me at all. Then I noticed a single shelf of toys that had the label Classics on it. I started to look closer and saw a Bumblebee. "Holy hell," I thought, "I haven't seen a Bumblebee since I was a kid! And what's this? A new Optimus that looks freakin' sweet?" So I brought my wife over to show them to her, and she told me I could get Prime or Bee as we kind of short of cash at the time. I, of course, picked Prime as he's always been my favourite. About 30 minutes later, we were walking around the shops looking at clothes for the female members of the family when my wife said I could get the yellow Tranformer if I wanted. I thought "Yellow Transformer? Oh...she means Bumblebee! Sweet!!" So I ran back upstairs, snagged Bee and was quite happy. Couldn't wait to get home (as it were) and see what these new Tranformers were like.

After we got home and I opened them up, I was hooked. My wife even bought me a BT Grimlock for my birthday. Once we moved into our new condo and I had a custom-made display area to put stuff up in again, I just went to town.

Since then, it's been one hell of a ride! I just wish I'd caught Classics earlier as I missed most of the 'Cons.

I collect toy robots because I'm either retarded or a very sick man.

I seriously don't know anymore but I love my precious toy robots anyways.

ive always had a collectors mentality, not hardcore, not by a long shot (i have to say that because i can still enjoy something without haveing them ALL!)

I got into TF as a direct consequence of having 'micronauts' in the 70's, they were the western release of takaras microman toys from which sprang megatron, bumblebee, soundwave etc. the micronauts were reconfigurable to a degree, both robot and humanoid figures had those tight chiseled faces of many japanese toys. i really loved that look so when i saw the first gen 1 toys I was immediately attracted to them, little did i know many of them were
'micronauts' as such. Ive watched the shelves as an adult collector since BW, bought a few bits and pieces but interestingly only with animated am i wanting to buy LOTS of toys again!

:)

Not that I don't like hyping myself at any given opportunity...

But the beginning of July will see the triumphant return of my collection on display. It's been 8 months of having the entire thing hidden away in storage, 8 months of gathering Japanese exclusive pieces and rare crap, 8 months where two BotCon sets were acquired and almost every toy I bought went straight to storage.

No lie, the weekend everything goes back up, I'm having BBQ and beer at my place for the usual suspects. It's going to be a media circus.

Because I think Transformers are awesome and it's nice to have lots of robots on display. Awesome and robots is like the best combination there is. I also have Gundam kits, lots of them which still need to be built or need to be better painted.

I'm not buying many TF's these days because I buy comics these days. I will try and get lots of TFA though.
