2007 Timeslines comic thoughts.

Postby Scaleface » Sat Jul 21, 2007 9:55 pm

I got it today and have read it three times. Great work overall.

I liked the line about "reinforcements from Cybertron" (from the old G1 catelog) - maybe the next years club exclusives will be his reinforcements?

One little thing I might mention is they made a big deal about how they had to assume earth alt-modes as to blend in with the locals - then on the planet no Autobots ever assumed their alternate modes (except Swoop, who isn't a vehicle anyways!) So much for blending.

I loved the profile pages. Great work, but arn't the wings on Bugbite backwards? The wheels are supposed to be in front right? Also, he seems to go from "Bugbite" to "Bug Bite" several times in the story, and even is used both ways on his bio page. Which is it? I'll go with the tech spec card, which is spaceless.

Shockwave is a head - hehehe. He deserves that after when he did to Optimus in the early pages of the Marvel books.

Megatron's known weaknesses line was very nice - although I'm still trying to find out when Megatron and Soundwave were hit by Cerebro Shells in the first place. They seem to just suddenly be under control.

Bonuses for the mentions of Perceptor, Bombshell, Monzo, Hi-Test, Hi-Q, Last Autobot and other classic characters.

It did leave me wondering who died and who didn't at the end, and if all the Decepticons who didn't die ended up staying with Megatron.

Whent he Autobots attacked did they take Ratchet as well as Mirage? Be nice if they rebuilt him to look like Cybertron Red Alert.

The extra story about the Mini-Cons at least fills in a hole in the Storyline as why Mini-Cons suddelnly exist in G1. Good to know someone was working on that.

It reaked of fanboy spooging and the art wasn't all that great either. So yeah, obviously I didn't like it.

Well, the problem is, is that no matter what is produced today, professional or not, everyone seems to think that it all comes off as fannon. Of course it does, it's being modeled after the original comic. And then when something different does come out (I.E. the Movie), it's crucified for being different. "That's not G1". Damned if you do, damned if you don't. It's just something I don't buy, and seems to be an easy excuse to not like something. Just like everyone's thoughts on Dreamwave, but that's just my humble opinion.

I do look forward to when I can get this. But everytime I'm ready to buy comics from the site I get them from, Any of the timelines books are never there. It's frustrating.

I got the feeling that Magnus and his crew were the reinforcements.

And yeah, the artwork clearly was not up to Milne's usual standards. Of course, I think he had Megatron: Origin, the movie adaptation, and a severe case of sickness to deal with, so I think we can give him a pass in this instance.

No, these guys were going after Bugbite's crew, not Megatron. Optimus needed reinforcements against Megatron to join him. They Autobots on Earth are still outnumber badly after his story, especially if the Seekers and Dreadwind and all were left on Earth after the battle.

Well. Weirdwolf got cruched for sure, and since the rest of them were only there to sell the convention toys, I doubt they'll make their way into the newsletter comic.

I liked this. The art was consistent, and the story was interesting. It was also cool seeing lesser used characters, like Elita-One. They definetely deserve some limelight.

Also, seeing Megatron is in Classics appearance was a cool bonus. Good work all around.

2 thumbs up.

It was fanwankish, although it was nice to for once see a comic with references to the old Marvel comic instead of just the cartoon.

Here's the ones I spotted:
- Ratchet can be seen near Megatron's chair (nod to the final G1 issues and possibly the early stories).
- Shockwave the head (a role reversal from the early comics).
- Ravage as a covert agent instead of a animal.
- Bludgeon and the battle of Klo got mention (Late G1).
- Grimlock as a intelligent TF instead of a retard.
- The cave structure around the Ark looks similar to the early comics (issue 1 to 4).
- The Ark as the Decepticon base (once again a nod to the early G1 comics).

I don't consider what IDW are doing, and even what DW did to be anything remotely close to fannon.

This story however, completely tacky.

Not necessarily you, but there have been many rumblings about the Dreamwave stuff being nothing more than glorified fan fiction.

IDW, I guess, has been pretty close to keeping away from this with their stories, no doubt thanks to Furman however.

Furman visits all the various TF boards from time to time. so he knows what stories/scenarios to avoid.

I don't see this. It's fiction, and yes, the writers are fans of the show, but it's no more fan fic than any other story.

Yeah, but no one did it's "fanficcy" nods more obviously than Dreamwave did. There's the appearance of Devcon, the use of the rub symbols and Minispies, among other things.

How is having characters appear in the comic fanfic? There were lots of fun references in Dreamwave I didn't see a problem with that.

I don't think Devcon appeared in Dreamwave, it was 3H Enterprises.

Devcon did not have a speaking role, he was simply one of the homeless Autobots on the street sitting propped up against a wall as 'someone' (can't remember which character) walked by.

But yes, he was also a part of 3H's Wrecker's-verse.

15 years after the US Marvel G1 comic, set on Earth. This is the same continuity as the Classics stories currently being printed in the club mag.

The stories don't fully tie in with the Marvel continuity though. They ignor the Marvel UK timeline where the 86 movie would by now have taken place and Rodimus Prime would be leading the Autobots and Galvatron the Decepticons and the G2 comics where Megatron returned much earlier and Bludgeon was destroyed, as was Mirage. Technically there was never a specific timeframe refferenced in the G2 comics so depending on how the Classics stories play out it may still be possible for the G2 material to be retconned in after the Classicsverse stories come to an end and the club start pushing their next set of exclusives.

Oh how I've waited for someone to continue on from the old Marvel run. The longest and best version of G1. In my opinion at least.

That said, I loved the Dreamwave stuff. Devcon appeared in War and Peace when Smokescreen is leading Prowl and Ironhide to the Autobot resistance. He's sitting on the ground as they walk by.

Where can you get these timelines comics btw?

Last year's pre Beast Wars story 'Dawn of Futures Past' is sold out. Ebay for that one I'm affraid. Like last year there are two versions of this year's comic 'Games of Deception'. One of these is the Botcon edition (Decepticon cover and convention scedule) and the other is the direct market edition (Autobot cover). You should be able to find the direct market edition at a half way decent comic shop, I haven't been near any half way decent comic shops lately so I picked up mine at Forbidden Planet :P The ongoing Classics material that this ties in with is in the Collectors Club Magazine, around six pages worth every two months and you need to be a club member to get this. IDW put out a TPB of the first two years worth of club story, set in the Cybertron continuity but referencing Universe and leading into the current Classics stuff, although it isn't known at this time whether this trend will continue when there's enough material for a second book. Since the club is also finishing off the 3H Universe stuff now I remain hopeful that this will be collected as an (out of sequence) second Timelines volume with the Classics material as a third. We'll just have to play the wait and see game on this.

By finishing off the universe stuff do you mean just reprinting the four uncoloured pages that exist or actually giving us a decent conclusion?

I got all my universe and wreckers comics in 2004 and thanks to 3H and dreamwave had no closure on the following:

Wreckers issue 3
Primeval dawn part 3
Universe issue 3
Energon issue 30
Ongoing issue 10
WW AoW issue 3

So if i can close just ONE of those storylines down in my own head it'll be a good thing :P

Collector's club is finishing the Wreckers in its bi-monthly magazine.

I didn't know they had planned on doing that with the Universe stuff as well, I thought that was gone...maybe I hoped it was gone, I guess I should say.

Yeah, what Scaleface said. FunPub did say back in the early days that they wanted to get some closure for the folks who were let down by 3H, so I'm still holding out hope that they will put something together for the main Universe storyline as well. Now if we can get that and IDW manage to get volume 3 of War Within back in print and finished I'll be a happy camper.
