Abominus by Devastator

Postby TM Devastator » Sun Jul 22, 2007 11:22 am

I really wasn't going to make a "Call of the Primitives" head originally, but my brother kept insisting and I ended up finding some old kibble that was almost perfect for the job. On the non-CotP head I forgot to paint white on the sides. The next time I break out the paints I'll try to remember to fix it.

Thanks for your compliments! Yeah, I really liked the wild antennae that Abominus had in that episode.

As for the chestplate, I could swap the one I customized with an non-customized one if I wanted. My customized Hungrrr has mostly the same proportions as my non-customized Hungrrr, the key difference of course being the lower legs.

No... but he is good. Fantastic stuff. Taller, more articulated... if you hadn't been going for 'toon styling on the paintjob it would've been perfect! ;)

Heh, sorry Ramrider! I've always loved how the show made the characters look and I strive to make my customs look more like the characters in the show did. I know some people like to use their fancy dry-brush and black-wash techniques and whatever else. That's fine and most do a good job with that. I guess it's just another way to try and re-live the excitement I used to have for the show.

same here. I like a clean paint job but aim at toon style not realistic detailed paint jobs. It brings out more magic when you are a fan of G1.

Yay Terrorcon love!

Question though: what do you do with all the handless RID Magnuses? :P
I'm adding Kitbash galleries regularly now at the TFArchive. Stop by the Kitbash forum to learn more.

Heh, good question! First, some history.

All of the fists I've used are from various Prime figures except for Computron who uses RiD Railracer hands.

Devastator used RiD Prime's super mode hands, Bruticus used Omega Prime hands (which yes, come with Ultra Magnus), Defensor used Anniversary Prime hands, and Abominus used Cybertron Prime hands.

I gave my RiD Prime to a buddy at the convention this year. He's given me so much kibble for my combiner customs I like to think of it as a thank you to him. RiD Magnus is in a pile of parts I stuffed into his box. I used his Omega Prime hands and feet for Bruticus and some misc bits for a classics Prime trailer I haven't done much work on. The Anniversary Prime hands came off of my Anniversary Prime. He remind handless until I traded a bootleg Hotrod with TFmaster for a new set of fists. What's left of Cybertron Prime is stuffed behind my kitbashing table 'cause I have no where to put him. Finally, J-4 sits in a kitbash box waiting to be useful again.

We need to find someone who can cast these things. It seems a shame having to get loads of big expensive 'bots who are only being used for the hands...

I second that! Just about everyone that customizes wants more poseable hands. It would be a tremendous help if someone could cast decent hands.

I'm a bit curious about the Abominus head with the antennae. Is that a modded MP Prime head you used?

Nope! It kinda looks like that's where the face came from though eh?

The face is from a bootleg Superion head. I would have prefered an Alternators face but I didn't have any I wanted to cut up. The dome part of the helmet, the mohawk, the upper antenna, and the vents on the side come from an SD Gundam model kit two-pack. The pack contained a Heavy Arms and Sandrock kit. One of the kits was missing pieces so it was marked down by myself at work. My associates kept saying I should get it for my customs and I eventually gave in. I'm glad I did! That was years ago now.

Anyhow, the visor was a bootleg Hotspot wheel I sanded the details off of and cut to shape. The lower section of the antenna were gun barrels from a Cybertron Scattorshot.

Despite how it may look, I the SD Gundam heads were too big to just sand down and paint into Abominus' head. I actually cut various sections out of the two heads and as a result Abominus' head is made up of about 16 pieces. I was able to use a lot of glue so it's superisingly very stable. I've dropped the head about a dozen times and it's received no damage.

Devastator are you planning on doing a Menasor? I think he would prove to be a tough one. I was looking to purchase a G1 Motormaster to face off against my G1 hybrid style Convoy and G1 titanium UM. I was looking to make Motormaster "toon accurate" but it seems kinda tough because he changes colors when he transforms to robot mode. I saw your work on Onslaught and Bruticus and was just wondering you take on this Idea?

Yeah, me too! My brother was really insistant about me making it. I think the undersized bootleg head looks fantastic too, but it's not the triumph of customizing that the CotP head was for me.
