I just matched each segment up so that it it was paired with the same size segment so that it would taper off evenly and it looks pretty good for a nice long neck. Keep in mind that those ball joints are often kinda loose/floppy though, and the more weight you add, the worse it gets so you may need to tighten them up a bit using the nail polish or superglue trick.
