he's gay. so what? as a reader of the books, i don't see how this is a big deal because it has no real effect on the plot. i never understood why it is so "newsworthy" when someone comes out of the closet.

Thanks, Tweezy

Therein lies the difference. Dislike sits just this side of neutrality, whereas hatred is an extreme.
Hate is hate. I can't make it much more obvious than that.
Dislike is not hate. What's your point?
I'll take the junkeon's side. "Dislike" stems more from the sub-voluntary act of having distaste for something, but either not fully accepting of the dislike or able to cope, while "hate" more draws upon the recognition of some adversion on the conscious scale and the acceptance and embracement of it, to the point of even wishing to destroy the thing of distaste.
The difference is between a man saying he doesn't like homosexuality, but reality doesn't care whether other people do, whereas another may say homosexuality is an affront to him personally and to humanity, and would would think it best to see it wiped out.

I whole heartly Dislike homosexuals and I completely fail to see why the frag it is news worthy that some fictional old wizard turns out to be gay. I'm glad I'm not gay, so people don't have to debate about whether they hate me, or just dislike me...though since I'm a girl most wouldn't have a problem with it anyway...

Well, it should be said that there's a distinct difference between disliking (or even hating, if we're going to extremes here) Homosexuality, and Homosexuals.
Hating the Homosexuals will get you nowhere, just more slime in your heart.
Hating the Homosexuality is kinda rocky ground you're dealing with. Many say that because they're Gay, Homosexuality is what they are, so you have to take all of it to accept them, etc.
Same could be said for Straight people, and Gays who can't stand them.
Point is...no one who's Gay, Straight, whatever should have to feel like they're a nobody because the rest of the world decided it's alright to kick them. You might not agree with their personal life, but don't hate them.
There is a difference. If more people saw that (or were willing to) then I think things would go a lot easier.
Whatever they do in their bedroom, behind closed doors is their business, not mine. So please don't bring it to me, shove it in my face, because I don't do it to you.
I just don't understand why people can't live in peace. If you're Gay, you're Gay, if you're not, you're not. Why is it so important to make the other side see what your world is like? Why force your world onto someone else's?
I mean seriously...whatever happened to "The pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness"? Just live people, the rest of it will sort itself out in time.

There are some gays that make it harder for straight people to accept them, particularly religious folks. Going out in a parade that's rated X in a place where children can see is gonna tick anyone off, and it's not gonna help your cause. It's kind of like how bimbos getting naked in front of a crowd for attention sets back the women's rights movement. If you want respect, you have to earn it.
Now, there are people that hate gays just because. My husband used to be one of those people. He had no qualms with saying something loud enough for a gay couple to hear. He has sinced changed (thank god).
I honestly don't believe there is any choice in homosexuality, and I will not hate someone because of something they are born with. Just keep it between you and your partner, and I'll treat you with kindness and respect.
Oh, and the reason this is newsworthy should be obvious. Rowling is putting a gay character in a worldwide phenomonon, and one that isn't a stereotypical gay at that. He actually has some depth (or so it seems, I don't read the books). This is considered a step forward for gays.

Wow thats different
We can't go around assuming everybody is straight
Well, if it's day to day, and you don't live in any gay neighborhoods, you really still can, if not just as an modus operandi. The actual community that calls itself gay is still very small (though many would argue we're all to a point bisexual), so it wouldn't be bad assuming the greater norm until proven otherwise.
EDIT: Of course, unless you're walking through certain sections of Mass. or LA.

This made the 6 o'clock news over here. Apparently it's THAT newsworthy...Although anything Potter related makes the AUS news these days.
Frankly I don't really care that he turned out to be gay. Doesn't really add too much to the story, except for a better explanation to the whole Dumbledore & Grindelwald issue.
For the record, I almost accepted Gay culture....And then I saw Chris Crocker...

I've really come to hate my avatar. I've tried to change it into a drawing I did myself, but it won't do it.

So what?
I want to know why she decided that info was necessary to be released?
It does not change his character or anything at all. Makes some things in the last book make a tithe more sense, but not much more, does not change the story or plot in any way shape or form either.
I would have thought she would have kept that "secret" secret until she needed it to sell her encyclopaedia's or for when she runs out a money, and needs to do interviews and stuff again to sell more of her badly written books.
