Any Ghostbusters fans here?
I don't know about anyone else on this board, but aside from being a huge Transformers fan when I was growing up, I was a huge Ghostbusters/Real Ghostbusters fan...
Now I just read some news that has made me geek out!
Dan Aykroyd said in a recent radio interview that Ghostbusters III, which was once considered as dead, will be made! It will be CGI, and Bill Murray has agreed to voice it!
Hopefully they can get it out by 2009(which will be the 25th Anniversary of the original Ghostbusters)

Actually, Ghostbusters 3 didn't die. The original concept for Ghostbusters 3 became Evolution.

Actually you're wrong....the original concept for Ghostbusters III was hell comes to NYC...basically hell is overcrowded so Hades(the greek god of the underworld)starts to turn NYC into a hellish version of itself...hopefully this will make it into the new movie

Um, as a huge Ghostbusters fan. How about a link to this news?
The only radio interview Akroyd did that mentioned ghostbusters was saying that Universal purchased the rights from Sony to do a Ghostbusters Game, and that Akroyd would be doing voice and mocap work for them in the next year.

No wonder I liked Evolution so much. That was a great flick.
Ghostbusters rules. If they made a new movie or a game, I'd be there, money in hand.

Extreme Ghostbusters kicked arse. I don't see why fans hate it.

I love Ghostbusters! I also liked Extreme Ghostbusters when it was on, mainly because it was somewhat original. This news of a possible sequel/game makes me very happy!

No no no, Evolution was a movie from a couple years ago that had a few things in common with Ghostbusters.
I thought it was Ghostbuster Evolution, too. Then I remember Evolution was a different movie.

Actually, I'm right. I know that the hell thing was the first concept for Ghostbusters 3 but I've read an interview with Ivan Reitman where he explained how he and Dan Aykroyd, along with David Jakoby, took elements from the original concept and turned it into Evolution.

Here's the link to the story I originally found out about this news:
(Aykroyd's in Bold)
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/31441
And here's the transcript where the guy asks Aykroyd about GB3:
(Aykroyd's in Bold)
One thing I have to ask, and I’m gonna break these out one by one, I know you talked about it on TV, but the Internet still buzzes about it all the time, I grew up with Dan Aykroyd as Dr. Raymond Stantz.
Uh-huh, yes yes.
I think you know what the question is going to be and unfortunately I think I know the answer too, but everyone is dying to know: Ghostbusters III–we’ve heard tons of rumors about it, does this thing exist?
Well, I wrote a script called Hellbent, uh, Ghostbusters go to Hell, basically its–the premise is that its Manhellton–that there’s Manhattan and Mannhelton. And if you can basically, build a phase–an interdimensional phase system, so that you can go from one dimension to another, we’ve succeeded in doing that, and we go to the Hell side of Manhattan. Which, Downtown, Foley Square its all where the cops are, its they’re all blue minotaurs. Uh the uh–Central Park is this huge deep mine with green demons there, surrounded by, you know, black onyx 1000 foot high apartment buildings with uh classic red devils, you know, very wealthy, and we go and visit like a Donald Trump like character who’s Mr. Sifler, you know, Luke Sifler, LukeSifler, Luk–so its it and we meet the devil in it. Now it won’t happen as a live action cuz Billy will not come onto the live stage anymore for it, but he will voice his part, and we’re looking to do it as a CGI animated project.
Really? Yeah? SO Ghostbusters III…
It lives! It lives today!
Wow.
Last year, last year it didn’t–this year it lives.
That is great news.
Yeah, that’d be good, because, you know, with that, with CGI animation and the way these uh, these cartoons are done, we can just do everything that I ever wrote in that script for much less money.
That is great news.

I completely missed this thread!
I saw this on Ghostbusters.net the other day, but was skeptical. This seems to come up all the time and then go away. I'm still skeptical.
I didn't like the early script overview for III (where basically a new team of Ghostbusters go to Hell - which is overcrowed, so Hades is deporting the dead to NYC.)
I guess the CGI is okay, because we can still have the same characters... but nothing beats live action, especially Murray's physical performance. Ghostbusters is a tricky property though, because it has to stay grounded or it becomes ridiculous. CGI might take it in the direction of pure action camp, not straight comedy with a hint of action which worked so well.
I'm torn on this one.

It wouldn't be the same if they changed from the original 4 (although Winston didn't do much in either film) but like Milanion said, Murray's physical performance just won't go well with cgi. I have mixed views about this. I want it to go well because I love both movies and cartoons (including Extreme) but then again, it's been 15(?) years since the last movie. It seems like they are trying to squeeze out every last penny they can get. I feel the same way about the new Indiana film that's being made. I'm so conflicted.

Once again, I find myself in agreement with you. When you get right down to it, with out Murry, Ghostbusters probally wouldn't have been any good, or at least not as good.
Then agin, the cartoon kicked all kinds of multiple ass, so who know?
Damn, now I gotta go put the DVD in and watch it.

I watched it last weekend. That DVD is great. I love watching with the Production Note subtitles.
Personally, I think the franchise would do better as a new live action series on SciFi - if it had better "ghosts" like the cartoon, but was more subdued like the original movie. Something with a "Firefly" type budget and cast.
I love the mundane/action dichotomy of the original movie. That was just right the balance. Always in my Top 5 movies.
