Amelie wrote:G1 Scorponok. I always wanted his chunky green and purple ass. When I finally got him (sans a lot of accessories) - he just came as a big ball of disappointment. The arm articulation at the elbows felt half-done and the base mode lacklustre.
I think its more a case of having too higher expectations.
G1 Devastator on the other hand - total reverse. Delightful figure.

I watched the cartoons and would see pics of them in newspaper flyers, but only select figure were in the flyers or commercials for that matter. Well id say around Thanksgiving of that year we went to Childrens Palace ( old toy store here in Cleve Oh now out of business) and man... I was let down by a good portion of the autobot cars and Megatron smh. The worst offenders was Ironhide and Ratchet lol I remember thinking "this cant be them".

Got one when the first TRU reissues were around (edit: I'm counting 16 years old as "being an adult" here. Started college at 17 so it counts to me as "close enough".) Keep in mind, this is at a point where I did not have a deep or consuming interest in Transformers. I didn't know the cab was a white OP and the whole thing was basically an armor trailer suit for it. I just didn't know. The initial disappointment was so palpable that the first time I excitedly saw said Comm. Series Ultra Magnus on the shelf, I ended up leaving it there because of the disappointment.
It's one of my favorites now, but that initial shock ran deep.

Huh. Interesting. Among my friends, the white Optimus + armor was what made the figure so cool. That was several months before the character was introduced in the movie, so we didn't know they were going to completely ignore that entire facet of the figure.

i used to have the original G1 Magnus eons ago! & your right....it is a white G1 Optimus....with one difference....in that the legs could fold up behind the cab section....which gave you this weird cube shaped thing in which you slotted into the main body(you could also do that same sort of thing with Powermaster Prime's cab section) & it's that one aspect that's lacking with CW Magnus...& quite possibly Titan Wars Powermaster Prime too.

THE CARTOON LIED TO ME!!!!!

Luckily for Floro Dery, he wasn't technically responsible for the 1984 cast's animation models - he just did the tidy up.
Its why the '85 bots look so much more like the toy. (ie - Red Alert vs Sideswipe)

Floro Dery has claimed that it was HE who humanized BB, IH and Ratchet's face.

Whilst he may have had something to do with the Season1 animation models - the bulk of the work was already done and he tidied up. Adding a face to Ironhide is minimal when you compare the overall cartoon model to the toy.
