The computer I have now is a refurbished one, payed $600 for it, it runs just about everything I need to just fine, including video editing software. If you're going to purchase an alienware, more power to you, but be sure it's the one you want, $1000 will buy you a lot of power but it will put a steep dent in your pocket.
As for video editing software, windows movie maker should run without any problems. However in my line of work you'd be laughed out of the building for using windows movie maker, I would suggest familiarizing yourself with something like Adobe Premiere, it's pricey, but it's worth it if you can figure out how to use it. If the program interests you, Adobe offers trial programs for all of their products that allow you to make use of their full functionality for 30 days.
Hope that helps
