Okay, I like Harry Potter, don't get me wrong, but there are others who do "funny" fantasy a lot better (Terry Pratchett, for example... who is also kid friendly. For those who just watch movies, see if you can find a copy of Hogfather sometime, its a BBC movie last year). It's definately clear that around the 5th book, however, the books stopped being aimed clearly at kids and more at adults, as the writer realized what her core audience was becoming... as that happened, however, a lot of the "humor" or "new" factor went out of the HP books.
The last book, especially... was purely written as a fantasy novel aimed at young adults and older. And when you get rid of the "kid" factor and the "humor" factor, then you're competing on a whole new playground. George Martin, Terry Goodkind, Roger Zelazny... heck even the Dragonlance authors are all better written pure fantasy series.
So why do I think Transformers is better than HP? Simple. Harry Potter is now, alas, over. The story is finished. There will never be any more official HP novels nor stories. One person wrote them, and that one person is done. Transformers, however, has kept going pretty much consistantly for over 20 years. Lots of stories, characters, history, etc. to pull from. Yes, a good bit of it is crapola, but there are quite a few gems as well, as everyone here knows.
You don't have to get into a fight with your g/f over which is better though. You can easily say that they each have their own merits. If you want to get her "into" your hobby, show interest in hers. Read the books (there's not that many of them) and consider yourself lucky that she's not into Barbie or something extremly pink. Then, when you're talking about book six, you can mention how the death of **** reminded you of how sad you were when Prime died, or things like that.
Maybe then I'll be loved.
