Barry Bonds indicted on Federal charges for lying about steroid/HGH use

I would like to personally congratulate the Federal Grand Jury for sucessfully handing down a federal indictment against baseball's "home run king" for perjury and obstruction of justice. What, like the Feds wouldn't find out?

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=a ... &type=lgns

Now comes the biggest question of all; can Bud "light" Selig do the correct thing and drop a big, fat, honking asterisk on Barry's "record?
It finally happened. The Chicago Cubs won the World Series. Yes, I cried.

Interesting philosophical question however: if it were legal, wouldn't everyone be able to use them?

I've been in the health care field for 11 years. I know what these drugs are capable of doing to the body. The reason they are illegal is because they are extremely dangerous. Long term effects include adrenal and thyroid problems, renal failure, cirrhosis, cerebral vascular accidents (strokes), sudden onset of cardiac problems, and death. That's a just a few...if this were a LEGAL drug, someone would have sued the maker for negligence in allowing the med on the market, such as with phen-phen, Vioxx, Thalidimide, etc.
It finally happened. The Chicago Cubs won the World Series. Yes, I cried.

Can't we have something not effected by technology. Shouldn't sports at least be pure? I don't see why people accept this, if Steroids are ok, why not cannons instead of pitchers?

I'd rather see a pitcher throw a 1 hit shutout or someone hit for the cycle then see someone hit monster homers. baseball is about more than the long ball: it's the matchups, the strategy, the history. It's a speedster bunting for a hit and stealing a base; it's a magnificently fielded double play or an outfielder robbing the hitter. All this existed before the steroids. Babe Ruth's only chemical enhancements were beer and hotdogs...and he did far more than hit homeruns; he was a great pitcher, a 94-38 record, a 2.38 ERA; he STOLE 123 bases! He won batting titles. He did it the right way. Ty Cobb had 4,000 hits. The Cubs even won a couple World Series. It's a great game that really is far more than just chemically augmented athletes whacking balls 450 feet...

(Stepping down from soapbox)

Now, Who's on first..?

Imagine what the game would be like if all the players used steroids. 1000 point games and pitches thrown through bodies. That would make this non-sports fan tune in.

EDIT - posted too slow.

Are the effects of these drugs more harmful than the effects of legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco?

On a slightly more sadistic note, if a guy making millions of dollars a year makes the choice to do something potentially detrimental to his health so that more people will watch him, it's rather low on the list of things I have to worry about. If it were up to me, I'd legalize all of these substances. Make these guys earn those millions of dollars per year. "Yes, Bill, you'll be making three million dollars per year, plus endorsements, but if you want to realistically compete, you are going to have to use some of these substances that might put your health at risk."

Ah, the typical anti-drug response: No good, all bad, and everything is lumped together in one category: Drugs.

It's used for building and/or rebuilding muscle tissue, and you honestly can't think of a good use for rebuilding muscle tissue?

But, yeah, you're right. Anabolic steroids, horrible drug. No uses at all. Whatsoever. Period. Won't help anyone, ever.

Yea, but wouldn't that just make the game even more boring?
It would come down to who had the better 'roids

As far as I'm concerned pro sports is just ridiculous.

A guy hits/trows balls for millions of dollars a year while a cardiologist or neurosurgeon pulls in 150,000-300,000 and their job actually benefits mankind through saving lives

To me its just ridiculous and obscene that they get paid so much

On that note, consider this: these 700 guys do their job batter than any other person on the planet..out of 6.5 billion people. Now, the top CEO's in the world make equivalent percentage money. The top lawyers, the same. Doctors? Same. If you are the best at what you do, you should make more money than everyone else, period. It doesn't matter what field you are in; if you are the number one person in your field OUT OF 6.5 billion people on the planet demand is going to be high. As a result, the price increases. It all comes down to supply and demand.

Yes, but CEOs run businesses, helping drive innovation, doctors heal people and lawyers, well we do need them

Even so, CEOs screw the **** out of their employees, robbing them of their pensions to put more cash in their own pockets

Top Executives in the US average 400+ times greater salaries than a standard employee, where its typically only 40-50 times (from what Ive heard) in other nations

Back to my point: the world would not grow stagnant and collapse if pro athletes took a pay cut

The only athletes I really respect anymore are the ones ho compete in the Olympics and do so because they love their sport, not for profit(like ppl like Bonds)

Athletes should compete for the love of the game, not the bankroll they can make off of it. If you really loved doing something, you wouldnt demand assloads of money to do it

The ball players deserve the millions of dollars if they are the reason millions of dollars are being brought in. They have earned that piece of the pie. And as someone stated, they are the best in the world at what they do. If I am among the best in the world at something, and if I'm the reason my bosses are raking in millions, you'd bet I'd demand appropriate compensation!

And I love baseball for the game itself, not just monster homers. It is the only sport I watch. I think baseball would be interesting without steroids, but not everyone else would agree.

I don't view sports as "sports" anymore. Yea, they are good at playing a game, but they are basically marketing expenses used to generate income for a business. There is no such things as professional local teams any more, just business making money.

Seriously, I don't know crap about soccer, but I hear more about David Beckham than I do about local government issues. Why? Soccer isn't even popular in America.

I'm aware of the uses of anabolic steroids- I'm using one right now for a medical condition. This doesn't have to do with the drugs themselves: it has to do with the illegal use and distribution of the drugs. It's the same as opium, cocaine, and anti-psychotics. Opiates are an amazing medication; cocaine has very strong healing properties. The problem that the Feds have is with people using them illegally and selling them illegally. In Barry's case, it isn't even that. The guy perjured himself in front of a Federal grand jury. Nineteen times, no less! The proper medical use of these medications is fantastic. They are still discovering uses for the chemical substances in the coca plant. I have no problem with that at all. It's the illegal and unethical use and distribution that is the problem.
One note off the subject: chemists have isolated the compound in marijuana that alters the perception of pain in the nervous system. Basically, the new medication gives all the benefits of marijuana without the mind-altering side effects and risk for addiction. So I have to wonder: why are they still fighting for medical marijuana? There's no need anymore. Once again, it boils down to the illegal use and distribution of the grass. That's all it is; people cannot be trusted to use good judgement with any of these medications...it's been shown in the past. As a result, the government made them illegal.
It finally happened. The Chicago Cubs won the World Series. Yes, I cried.
