Beyond Lead: Toxins in Toys

Postby Galvatron1 » Fri Jul 10, 2009 1:20 am

• Avoid painted toys made before 1978, because before lead paint was banned in toys, residential structures, and hospitals that year, it was used commonly in paints in the US.
• Imported painted toys carry a higher lead
risk because lead is less well-regulated in many developing countries. Choose toys manufactured
in the US, Canada, or the EU.

PVC & Phthalates
Polyvinyl chloride plastic, known as PVC or vinyl and identifiable by a #3 or “V” symbol, is so toxic for people and the planet at every point in its lifecycle that some activists call it by another name: the “poison plastic.”

Children’s polymer clays such as Fimo and Sculpey also have been found to contain trace amounts of phthalates. Studies have identified phthalates as a hormone disrupter. Phthalates may also cause liver and kidney lesions, a higher risk of certain cancers, and may exacerbate asthma and allergies in children.

PVC also creates dangerous chemicals throughout its lifecycle: making PVC releases carcinogens such as vinyl chloride and dioxins, and incinerating PVC generates carcinogenic dioxin.

Short of eating them, I don't think I'll be dying anytime soon.

If I die from collecting then at least I'll die doing something I enjoy.

Also, it's not like the plastic is radiating something dangerous everyday. Lead paint is only dangerous if you're dumb enough to put it into your mouth which I doubt any colletor is going to do.

Yeah, robofreak said it. And is anyone here likely to give pre 78 toys to their kids? I doubt it. But the info about foreign toys may be useful to some parents here.

You are right, most of the plastics used for toys are really bad for you. Not to mention, even a horribly yellowed JetFire will still be in the Landfill 100K years longer than I will be around, soo yeah.

So...pretty much nothing then? Most toys are made overseas, including Transformers.

Why wouldn't they?? Parents are always passing down hand-me-downs or things they played with as kids. I've got a few stuffed animals that might contain paints in the clothes. Some have plastic eyes or toy buttons on the clothes. I've got a few toys with plastics or painted wood. I was born in 76, so if I didn't know better, I might find some toys I used to play with, clean and disinfect them, and give them over just so my kids can have as much fun with them as I did.

It matters not, it's still relevant today.

Adverse Health Effects from the Operation of Digital Broadcast Television Stations (DVB‐T)
"Dear President Obama:

...We write to you today because we wish to save you from the significant negative health consequences that have occurred here in Germany. In Germany, analog broadcast television stations have gradually been switching to digital broadcast signals since 2003. This switchover first took place in metropolitan areas. In those areas, however, the RF exposures in public places as well as at home continued to increase at the same time. As a result, the continuing declining health status of children, adolescents, and adults in urban areas could not be attributed to any single cause. On May 20, 2006, two digital broadcast television stations went on the air in the Hessian Rhoen area (Heidelstein, Kreuzberg), which until recently had enjoyed rather low mobile phone radiation exposure levels. Within a radius of more than 20 km, the following symptoms that occurred abruptly were reported: constant headaches, pressure in the head, drowsiness, sleep problems, inability to think clearly, forgetfulness, nervous tensions, irritability, tightness in the chest, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, depressive mood, total apathy, loss of empathy, burning skin, inner burning, leg weakness, pain in the limbs, stabbing pain in various organs, weight increase.

Birds had fled the area. Cats had turned phlegmatic and hardly ever went into the garden. One child committed suicide; a second child tried doing it. Over time the same unbearable symptoms showed up in other locations—most recently in Bamberg and Aschaffenburg on November 25, 2008. Physicians accompanied affected people to areas where there was no DVB‐T reception (valleys, behind mountain ranges) and witnessed how these people became symptom‐free only after a short period of time. ..."

If I didn't know better, I'd say you worked for some news show, and sweeps is going on. I'm not the kind of guy who just openly criticizes the media (At least not all of it...I don't like you, Showbiz Tonight) but can we pull back on the fear mongering just a tad?

I've hit the point of having no idea what's going on in this thread. You went from lead in toys to radio signals.

I'll take my lead paint chips fried in bacon grease please.

This is someone who has apparently given in to the "_____ will kill you" fear mongering that seems to have become all the rage. I have to admit I've never seen it up close until now, but then I don't watch the news often, and when I do they usually have something more worthwhile to say.

I would consider myself to easily be in the top 10th percentile of the "Old Farts" on this site. I grew up with lead painted toys. Hell, I'm the youngest in the family so I got my older brothers hand me downs from the 60's as far as toys. We didn't know jack about putting chemicals in food and drinking water back then. I smoke, I work around hazardous chemicals (not while I'm smoking) and if given a choice I'd eat slabs of red meat that comes from cows that smoke. I don't live in fear, I don't worry about this, that or the other. I don't smoke around my kids but other than that I always kept an eye on them when they were young so they werent chewing on something they shouldnt because a responsible parent PAYS ATTENTION to what their kid is doing. The fact that we have dumb-ass parents out there blatantly stupid enough to leave a painted item where a kid can gnaw the paint off and swallow it just galls me.

EVERYTHING has toxins in it and something is going to kill us eventually. If I die of some kind of poisoning it will likely be lead and it will likely have hit me at over a thousand feet per second.

Which reminds me of an anti-smoking poster I saw at school once. It had a bunch of animals smoking, and said "It looks just as stupid when you do it." I thought that was ridiculous, because there's few things more awesome than an animal with a cigarette in its mouth.

But why be responsible when you can sue other people? It takes all the blame away from you, and you often get a nice settlement! Isn't that what being a parent is all about? Shifting the blame for money?

There's a sippie cup at my house for my baby cousin, and it says, "Keep the lead out of your children." I turn the cup around and there's a big white sticker that says, "Made in China." I'm not saying that the paint on the cup has lead in it, I just find it amusing.
