This very true scene wrote:A boy looks up at his astronomy teacher who is showing off a telescope, who also has no memory of the contact she has had with aliens and asks, "Do you think that there is other life out there?"
She looks down at him an smiles, and looks back out the opening of the observatory and says, "If not, it would be a big waste of space..."
My speculation wrote:A race of organic people, that could be much like us, have used all of the resources from their planet and they have turned into a wasteland, Trees die, animals don't have food to live, water becomes toxic, and the world becomes a desert, and people begin to die off. They race to find some way to save what is left of their species, and only one option is viable: Transferring their consciousness from their bodies, to a robotic being that they themselves created.
They take new names, more robotic names, for their original names weren't fitting.
They modified their desert world to make it not have a wear-and-tear on their joints, and to be new and technological.
Though with seemingly everything, they wanted more. They would begin conquest on a massive level, using their mechanical bodies to their advantage, they would take over worlds, and exhaust its resources, and leave a dead planet.
Some, however, don't want violence, they want what they had before, peacefulness. They would band together and begin to rebel, it would be small at first, but they would grow stronger with each passing second, so then seeing the rebellion grow, the warlike side would see them as threats and begin to fight, and then begins the civil war.
Their war would branch out from just their own, and come to other worlds. Seeing that they wouldn't want to be discovered by the natives, so they chose their own forms of hiding among the natives by modifying their own bodies to be able to scan one thing, and become it.
