Trust me, after you see it, you will like Transformers more than you did before.
I never thought I would say this, but it's better than the original movie and I am a G1-er.

Look, I had to grow up and realize that things don't always go the way I want them. Now, that doesn't mean I go out of my way to complain about them either.
When I first got on the internet and on message boards, I was a pure pain in the ass. Not because I intended to be, but because I was an idiot. (I still am to a certain extent, we all are.)
Now, if I'm an asshole, it's because I choose to be. I don't actually like being one, but I do like to use the common sense I was given. Make up for all the times in the past that I haven't used it.
This movie shouldn't affect anyone so deeply that they give up their collecting, their affection for the mythos, etc.
A lot of people hate George Lucas for what he did with the prequels in Star Wars whereas I happened to like them quite a bit.*
Don't let fanboyishness get in the way of enjoying yourself and having a good time with TransFormers. That's what a hobby is all about! Who wants to spend scads of money on something that brings them great displeasure?
I didn't like Beast Machines (the series), but I loved the toys. I bought 'em because I enjoyed 'em. I don't buy G1 because I can't stand the toys, but I still like the show. (to some extent)
If I let my dislikes run how I interact in this world of collecting, I'd never be happy and never own anything. I'm one of the most critical and whiny people you'll ever meet and even I have learned that sometimes I just need to shut the f*ck up and enjoy the ride. Sure, there are times it's boring, times when you want to give up along the way, but in the end...you've had a hell of an adventure, had great new experiences and met people you never even knew existed.
Sounds a lot like life, doesn't it? The great thing is, while life has somethings you must go through (and that's not a complaint), collecting is something you don't. If you honestly feel that you'll suffer because of it, then don't put yourself into such a situation. Don't waste the money and then bitch about it. I did it, I should know. My bitching muscles should be able to bench press the island of Manhattan.
Now? I don't have to spend $180.00 on a single figure (F*CK YOU G1 PROWL AND YOUR HEFTY PRICING! YOU KILLED MY WALLET THAT CHRISTMAS! YOU SUCK!). Now, I can buy what I want and not what I don't want, and then all I have to bitch about is overindulging myself here and there, not a bunch of "OMGBBQWTF?! HASBLOW SUX! THEY MADE HIM THE WRONG COLOR! AND HIS WEAPON DOESN'T GO THERE! D00D, THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END!" type of posts. (oh how those posts make me want to pour Draino in my skull and let it seep into my brain.) I got rid of that ridiculous completist attitude and I'm much better off because of it.
I wasn't a fan of the movie when all of this came to light at first. I damn well hated Starscream's sh*tty Chicken walker/Gundam design...but now, I love that figure and he's one of my favorite movie pieces. (NOTE: Results may vary, case not typical.)
Why did I change my mind? Because I relaxed and had fun and realized that I was taking it too serious. (Collecting and TeH INTERNET: Serious Business.)
I'll admit, I hate the idea of TF: Animated, and the designs even more so. But, then I realize I don't have to watch the show, I don't have to buy the toys, and there's stuff that I like that will still be available on the side so I'm not left out.
Plus, all of this is for the kids. We're not kids anymore. We can, however, still be one at heart and have fun like one.
*= The Phantom Menace could've moved a tad faster, and relied less on such a convoluted storyline, but more on action...still, it's not a bad movie, and it's part of my collection. I'm still scratching my head at some of it though. Trade disputes? Blockades? Political nonsense? I get the whole the "God vs Satan" issue...the rest of it makes my brain bleed. Couldn't it have just been that there's some intergalactic prick causing problems and the Jedis come and clean it up, like in the original trilogy? Oh no...you need to make it current, make it relevant to today's issues. Ah. Gotcha. Way to make people hate you and solidify that their thinking it's a suckfest.

Yeah, I'm uptight, generally. I admit it.
And yes, YOU WILL LIKE IT! YOU'LL EAT LIGHTNING AND CRAP THUNDER TOO! (..or however the hell that goes...) J/K.
I'm not saying he's not a true TF fan. I'm said that if one thing can ruin the rest for him (or anyone for that matter), then he (or anyone else) isn't a true fan.
Should I hate everything else because I hate G1 toys, TF: Animated and it's whole "thing"? Of course not. That would be absolutely silly.
Not hating everything because of a couple items I find hard to swallow, is being sensible.
Worrying that 2 hours and 20 minutes of film might ruin everything you love, is not.
And I fully agree, he should go see the movie and make a decision on the film itself about whether or not he likes it, and it should be *HIS* opinion.
