Sorry, I just watched the movie and I feel about talking about something.
It seems these Decepticons are the weakest ever. Not in the sense of not being powerful, but they are quite easily destroyed by humans. Like it was said in the movie, they knew they can be harmed by Earth's weapons, and that's why disabled the country's weapons and communication systems.
What comes to mind is that they are very similar to Godzilla. Remeber the 1998 Godzilla Movie? The Japanese Godzilla was indestructable, but a few planes ripped him apart in the US version.
I totally understand the basic plot. These Decepticons are not super-indestructable machines that come to Earth just to be the Decepticons. They're depicted as aliens, creatures that can be gunned down. So obviously, they cannot be the threat of the movie. Their objective is of course to capture the Allspark, that is why they're on Earth and that's why Prime said he would sacrafice himself to destroy it, it was the object of war. The Cons were putting themselves in a high-risk battle zone on Earth where the danger is hardly the Autobots.
It was nice to see the Blackout attack and all, but the whole point of that was to gather information and begin disabling the human's defense. Once the Decepticons are out of disguise and exposed, they are very vulnerable.
The whole point is this. The Decepticons could have been better, but the Movie would have droned on and on. The plot devices were the Allspark, the Autobots, and most of all, a story of coming of age and courage for Sam and Mikaela. The Autobots were practically unneeded except to inform about the Decepticons' motives. It's nice that at least Devastator and Bonecrusher were killed by Autobots. The death of Blackout was the worst, though. It's almost as if Blackout was a leftover in the plot, and of course they had to find a way to account for him. Because of the place in the storyline of the Decepticons, it was like, okay, kill them all quick so we can focus on the end. Sam getting Mikaela and the Allspark being destroyed. Even though, they still rushed by it so fast they left out Barricade, even though it showed him reporting to the call of Starscream.
Well, these are just some rants about the most awesome movie ever made, and it doesn't take anything away from Michael Bay or anything. In fact, if TF2 really focuses on the Decepticons and their possible origin and strengths, it could be even better.
