Diabetes!

Postby Powersurge » Sat May 17, 2008 4:23 am

Well I hadn't been feeling too well for the last few weeks (was always tired, always thirsty, peeing a lot, and just felt like crap) and the doctor got me to get some blood and other samples done to try and find out whats the matter, and my blood-sugar level was 17 mmol/L (it should normally be around 4-8 mmol/L), I've been told i have type 2 diabetes, Its been quite a lot to take in, I'm on meds and I have to read my glucose levels 3 times a day, but all in all I'm coping with it so far.

I'm not trying to get sympathy with this thread, just wanting to get the message out there to have your bloods tested every so often, you can have type 2 without knowing it, but your more at risk if your overweight and/or have a history of Diabetes in the family.

And any help from those with Diabetes (or if you know anyone with Diabetes) would be cool, I know of the Diabetes.org.nz site, but any other site with info (diabetic friendly foods and the like) would be helpful too.

Good luck with your illness!
Diabetes runs big time in my family but it can be beaten with diet and exercise as well as medication.

I too have some kidney issues now but thankfully they were able to rule out diabetes.

Good luck to you!

I've had type 2 Diabetes since I was 12 years old [I'm 37 now] So if I can help in anyway just ask.

But be warned your checking method seems to be a bit different then in the U.S.At least the terms for gaugeing blood suger levels is different.

I had no idea by what you ment by "normally be around 4-8 mmol".

Normal blood suger readings in the U.S. are 85 to 120.Our number system seems to be different.

Thats overstating the facts. It really cant be beat. But you can slow it down considerably with the methods you mentioned.

But how slow differs from case to case.

I didnt know we had that in common.

Yeah the USA uses mg/dL, but the rest of the world uses mmol/L, they can be converted to each other:-
Wikipedia wrote:To convert blood glucose readings:

* Divide the mg/dL by 18 to get mmol/L (or multiply by 0.055).
* Multiply the mmol/L by 18 to get mg/dL (or divide with 0.055).

Thanks for that.

If you have any questions on what foods to stay away from just ask.

Just a little advise......bread and rice can do more damage to your glucose level then a chocolate bar.

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis and I hope your regime of care goes well for you.

But while exercise and good diet can go a long way to limit the effects of DBT2, it usually won't make it dissappear completely. In some cases where people have morbid obesity coupled with DBT2, dropping weight does help them.

My friend has DBT1 and she gets super pissed though, when people think she's got it because of some form of grossly unhealthy lifestyle. Essentailly, there needs to be more public education.

Good luck on your journey to wellness or at least stability with BSLs.
Something memorable here.

It's a recent thing that just cropped up a couple of weeks ago...well there was an "incident" about 7 months ago but quickly went away, two weeks ago it was much much worse and I still have further testing to go.

I have a fairly good idea of foods i need to be careful of, and I've been told many times by people to watch for hidden sugar in things like bread and such, though I normally only eat brown/wholemeal bread anyway, and I'll start using brown rice more.

I've always known bout starchy foods, its just I've never really cared bout the fact starch turns to glucose, but I'm getting used to it all.

I am being anal about about the amount of sugar and that in foods, but later this week I'm having more blood tests that will (amongst other things) let me know what my blood-glucose level should be around, and how much a amount of sugar will raise my glucose, so then i can work out a bit better whats ok to eat.

I know a friend who has it, and he understands me too. I,ve got a question for you all: Do you like to eat pasta's? (macaroni, etc)
That contains the most glucose! So be careful with it.

Love pasta, had a little last night but they have ruled out diabetes with me and are calling it Hematuria or bleeding of unknown cause at this point, now the doctor does not think this is related to stones but my CT scan is not until the 30th of this month as they had to do a lot of blood work to make sure my kidneys could handle the contrast solution as it can have some rather "unfortunate consequences" even up to well, death...they make you sign a release document just for the contrast solution.

I've had it once or twice before so I'm not too worried.

I never liked white bread even as a kid! ... my dad used to work for a certain WONDERful bread company 40 years ago give or take and he said people used to spit and throw cigarette butts in to the vats of dough...maybe that's why I never liked it ?

Dude that kind of S#*t happens in every buisness that deals with food.

You wont believe the things I saw people do to food when I was working at McDowell's and Burger Kingship:sad:

Oh I'm well aware of that :P ...my sister used to work for a fast food chain that sells a lot of roast beef sandwiches for $5 bucks usually, I think it starts with an "A" :-P

This was well over twenty years ago but they used to spit in the salad bar, swipe mold on people stuff who were rude to them in the drive through and even buggers.

My motto has always been never be rude to a food service person until after you've eaten then you can take any complaints you need to them or the manager if needed however I cannot recall ever having to do that.

Good luck to us all with our health problems!
