Evangelion Rebuild (1.11 and 2.22) likely SPOILERS

So, I just got my copy off the new Eva movie 2.22 You Can (not) Advance

If you're unfamiliar with the rebuild movies, they essentially retell the Eva story, but with better production, a more coherent plot, and some significant changes to plot, specific scenes, and even characterization.

The first film was called Evangelion 1.11 You Are (not) Alone and it retold the first six episodes of the original series almost scene for scene. The noted exception to this is that Shinji's first time piloting the Eva is shown in full, real time and not as a flash back. Also, the ending of the film reveals both Kaworu and Lilith way earlier than the show did. All and all, 1.11 treads in very little new territory.

2.22 however...is VASTLY different from the show.

Gaghiel, Israfel, Sandalphon, Matariel, Iruel, and Leliel never appear and instead are replaced by other unnamed angels.

Sahaquiel does appear and is the "bombing" angel, though it plays out differently.

Bardiel appears and once again takes over Unit 3.

Zeruel makes up the last battle in the film.

So, other differences:

Asuka has her last name changed and is actually kind of softened a bit as the movie goes on. She ends up being the pilot for Unit 3 in place of Toji and is grievously wounded by the dummy plug controlled Unit 1. She's confirmed alive at the end.

Rei is a bit more human overall. Not by large degrees, but subtly. Her affection for Shinji is far more obvious. The infamous "I am not a doll" scene has her stopping Asuka's slap.

Shinji is all around a better character. His berserk scene is one of the better scenes in big budget anime.

Mari is a new Eva pilot who is both a big plus to the show and maybe the only weak point too. She's a very, very cool character who seems to have a genuine confidence all the others lack. At the same time, she doesn't get explained yet. She's just there and doing stuff and it's hard to believe NERV couldn't have that under control and prevent it from happening. So, that remains to be explained.

Anyone else get this yet or find themselves hyped for it?
Thoughts on the rebuild?

I am really, really enjoying the new movies. I think I watched the 2.0 cam rip about a dozen times the summer it was released.

I am beyond excited to find out more about the Mark 06, and Unit-08 entering Central Dogma.

Rei and Shinji both trapped together inside of Unit-01 has me wondering as well. If I recall correctly, Shinji learned that Unit-01 contained his mothers soul at this point in the series, will Rei find out that Unit-01 contains the original soul of her body? :-?

It's also interesting to know that Rei II was dead at this point in the series, and Rei III was likely born during this time. The fact that Rei II is still alive alone, means that instrumentality will go very differenty.

I simply cannot wait to see the third flick. =P~

Edit: The OST was truly wonderful.

I don't even really know where to begin speculating at the third movie. I'm just kind of letting it ride for now and enjoying what we have at the moment.

The original series has so much hurt inflicted on the characters that I almost want to see a more, I don't know...happy? ending. I really liked Shinji's protectiveness over Rei at the end. I even sat up on the couch to watch how that would play out.

Haven't seen the dub yet, but one of the things that impressed me the most with the original Japanese was the quality of the English. I thought I stumbled onto an English dub by accident despite the fact that it would be months until one came out.

Also, it supposedly hinted that these aren't remakes at all, but a sequel series. Like why the oceans are all red, everyone is aware that it's Lilith, not Adam, that's in Central Dogma, and Kaworu talks like he's met Shinji before. Because there's few things in this world Hideaki Anno enjoys more than a good mind-screw.

I like to think that during Instrumentality in the series, Shinji not only wished for life on Earth to remain the way it is, but to be able to go back and have another shot at the events leading up to Third Impact.

That would be really interesting if it was a follow up.

The red oceans did throw me off and they may be the best evidence of what you are proposing.

I'm a firm believer that this is a sequel of sorts. In the original series, Shinji's tape player would always started to play backwards after track 26 which was the final episode (not including the original Death and Rebirth/End of Evangelion) In Rebuild the tape player keeps going forward past track 26 now.

Also, Kaworu's comment that maybe he can make Shinji happy "this time" seems like a give away to me.

With the Third Impact starting at the end of 2.22 now, I can't wait to see what is going to happen in the final two movies.

When you consider that the moment where Shinji's tape player skips to track 27 is also where the movie starts making it's own story instead of following the original, it makes sense. It's not so much saying "It's a sequel" as it's saying "It's entirely new from this point on."

Third Impact seems to have been averted. On the other hand Unit-00 is destroyed, Unit-01 and Unit-02 are trashed, The Geofront and NERV HQ are completely wrecked and/or obliterated, there's a big gaping hole leading right to Lilith, and the only functioning Eva is in the hands of Kaworu, who isn't even trying to hide the fact that he's an Angel this time. They have a lot to do in 3.0.

While that's true, we have to remember that the pilots are in a lot better shape this time. In the series, around this time, Shinji was wallowing around in his own cowardice, Asuka's mine was broken, and in a comatose state, and the Rei we knew was dead.

Shinji was able to pull himself together when he was stuck in Unit-01 in the series, I'm certain he and Rei will be ok this time as well. Asuka's has been confirmed alive and looks to be full of piss and vinegar after her recovery.

There also some convincing screen shots showing how Unit-08 looks to have two Entry Plug covers. (Shinji and Rei?). I'm beginning to think that Shinji and Rei will remain in the state they are, trapped inside an Evangelion. The third films title, 'Quickening', has been likened to the birth of Unit-08, perhaps Unit-01 "evolves" into a form of the perfect Eva?

You're right about that. Things may look grim, but they're still a helluva lot better off than in the original. Shinji finally grew a pair (And nearly caused the End of Days; the universe cannot possibly comprehend Shinji Ikari being badass), Rei is still more-or-less human, and Asuka has become a pirate.

In the last few moments before the credits when Misato and Ritsuko are talking they comment that with Unit-01 awakening and esentially becoming a new life form the cost is the elimination of all other life. Misato notices Unit-01's wings and comments that it is the same as 15 years ago, and it is a continuation of the Second Impact. Ritsuko then flat out states that the Third Impact has begun.

Unit-01 doesn't seem really trashed, but it does look like it was speared in place. It is hard to tell though if it will even be controllable in it's awakened state.

Granted, I'm going off of the subbed version I have on my computer. I won't have the dubbed version until next week so I'm not sure if this scene will have the same dialogue.

Kaworu stops Third Impact with the Spear the Mark 06 used to impale Unit-01. Though it is likely this is The Spear of Longinus, it hasn't been confirmed. But it would line up quite nicely with the idea of Rebuild being a sequel of sorts, where in the series, The Spear was lost in Lunar orbit after Rei used it to defeat Arael.

There's also a blood smear on the moon, not far from Adam's corpse.

Yeah...you should always wait until after the credits.

Also, still no date set for 3.0. Though, from what I hear, they're releasing 3.0 and Final at the same time.

Most of those make perfect sense...but not the two at the bottom. I still think the thing with the tape player is a production joke, like their way of saying they're no longer following the original 26 episodes, and that, as of this skipping, it's all new story. And the thing about the coffins is really out of left field. Were there seven cycles that I missed or what?

Not sure. Personally I'm going with the first theory, and there are 10 Angels this time round.

Watched 1.11 and 2.22 on BD last night. :APPLAUSE: =P~

She understands. I mean, she didn't complain about that thing with Cammy...

Probably cause she knows she can take you out with one roundhouse kick.

Anyways, i'm watching the Rebuild tomorrow and then I'll post my thoughts

Well, I only had time to watch the first one, but so far I'm impressed.

One thing that still annoys me is how much of a pansy Shinji is.

I like that there was a larger focus on Eva fighting in 1.11. That was much better than the original anime.

I can tell that this is definitely a sequel to finish off the events of Instrumentality. The red water, revealing Lillith early, and Kaworu's appearance on the bloodstained moon from a previous Angel fight in Neon Genesis gives that away.

I'm hoping that 2.22 does stray from the orginal story. Apart from a few things here and there it felt like I was rewatching the first part of Neon Genesis with awesome new CGI Angels.

It does...big time.

Also, Shinji gets hardcore.

If Shinji finally grows some balls then I'll be happy.

It's always bugged me that he has control of the most powerful mech ever created and is too busy lamenting his life to use it properly. I can understand where Hideako was going with that, but it really limited Neon Genesis as we never got to see the limits of what the Eva's could do.

I'm the type of guy who expects lots of giant robot fighting when I know that giant robots are in an anime. Rebuild 1.11 definitely delivered much better than the episodes it was based off of and if 2.22 can pull it off with a change of plot then I'll be going into full swing Eva mode again.

This reminds me, there's some Japanese Eva Garage kits that I want badly. I just need more money.
