Frustrated Prime

Postby Grendel » Tue Jul 10, 2007 2:12 pm

Is it just me, or did Prime seem frustrated or aggrivated in the movie? his comments at Ironhide "what's with you?" and when Sam was looking for the glases, prime's holding his head and grimacing at the hold up. I'm not complaining about it, i liked seing prime get aggrivated for once instead of always being the inspirationsl speech making bot, it was like a side of his personality you rarely se in the cartoons and comics

Motto: "This is your end."
Weapon: Quasar Cannon
Prime didn't want Earth to be overrun with renegade xboxcons and mountain dew vending machines

Seriously though, I think to make it seem like Bumblebee is the closest one to the humans, the aggravation made Prime more distant.

Yeah totally noticed it when Prime was standing on the Witwicky rose bushes and had his arms against the house. And after Sam told Prime he couldn't find it Prime was doing the eye roll and head tilt and head hitting action; great detail.

I noticed how impatient he was too, and it was akward to see Optimus acting that way, he's usually a calm guy who tries to take thing at a steady pace, not trying to rush

:BOT: I like it... it shows even more emotion that we originally thought of Prime.

I especially love how they animated him grabbing the bridge of his nose when he was frustrated in trying to find the glasses. :CON:

I'd be impatient too if there was a chance of a helicopter or a jet or a tank that could attack at almost any time to get what I'm looking for.

Well, lets way the options:
No glasses ment possibly: -an entire planet worth of life(which Prime loves) would be destroyed -Megatron would win -Decepticons rule the Universe.

Thats some heavy stuff.

Personally, I'd expect a great leader to keep his composure in all but the most extreme combat situations.

It helps keeping the followers calm and collected.

Ideally, yes, a commander would always be calm and collected. But realistically? C'mon. I think that it added a nice human and relatable touch to him. I get sick of Prime being the saintly, perfect, untouchable figure he usually is in the shows. I've always been a fan of the frustrated and conflicted Primes from some of the comics... Much more realistic in my opinion.

Weapon: Switch Blade Tail
I liked that he was more humanized. We were able to connect with them easier.

I mean, let's take a look at this aspect for a second, let's use two other lovable robot movies involving humanity and being sentient.

Short Circuit:

Johnny 5 was adorable, no bones about it. Watching him with his childlike sense, and slowly growing sensibilities and sentience, was hilarious sweet and charming. It was what really pulled us in, it was the selling point. A robot with a heart. Did we care about robots 1-4? Of course not. They were mindless drones with lasers. Though, they made you laugh when reprogrammed into The Three Stooges.

I, Robot:

Sonny was assertive, but kind and thought provoking. Intelligent and utterly watchable. His fellow robots were just uncontrollable freaks with a master computer running them. No real emotional attachment to them, in fact you were rooting for them to be destroyed.

TransFormers:

Optimus and crew were quite human in their personalities, and they are sentient. There's an inherent kindness in Optimus and while frustrated, it still shows, shining like a beacon.
Bumblebee's attachment to Sam and wanting to stay with him shows that there's more to him than just programming. Ironhide made us laugh, Ratchet felt like an old country doctor, and Jazz felt very much like a kid with an attitude. All of which exist right this very moment.

I'm glad they sold them with some humanity. If they had been drones like the Nokia Cell Phone, Dispensor (Fan nickname for the Vending Machine), etc... they'd have bored us to Hell and back. Oh sure, we'd have enjoyed their antics and laughed along to a certain extent, but it would've bored us by the end of that 2.5 hours. They certainly wouldn't have been memorable for more than "Remember that scene? Yeah, it was cool. What else did they do? Huh. Guess I'll have to watch it again." which so many movies accomplish as we speak, and those characters are actual humans!

I liked the impatient Prime. I'll admit, at first it was jarring and I wasn't exactly okay with it. Then I remembered Optimus Primal and what a character he was...and it worked. Worked well I might add.

A mix of G1 and Beast Wars personalities worked, and I thoroughly understand and enjoy that scene in the backyard, in fact it's one of the best in the entire movie.

I hope they keep the characters this way in the sequels, although Ironhide could be a little less "squishy disgusted" and more humorous.

Prime said himself that time was short. He knew megatron was on the planet, and that if they were beat to the all spark the nokia cell phones would take over!...oh and probably megatron too...

I agree withthat 100%. Part of why I preferred BW Primal than most versions of G1 Optimus Prime is that Primal wasn't a perfect prime, he was a bot trying his best to be a perfect prime but not quite able to manage it. He ttied to do the best he can, but at times his temper slipped through. This made him feel more real.

well, to me, a good leader shouldn't ALWAYS be that high-strung, or else he might make a big mistake

I'll bet you'd be all giggles if your enemies were on Earth trying to destroy everything.

The fate of the world relies on you. Oh yeah, no stress there.

I loved how Prime was portrayed. Its only natural that he would be a bit agitated about finding the glasses, but no more so than a parent waiting on their child. I think Cullen did a great job of being pushy yet kind at the same time. The animators also did a great job with his non-verbal stuff. Rolling his eyes and everything humans do when we get frustrated. It made him so much easier to relate to.
