season 3....

i feel like crying when i think about season 3

but my highlight episode - i think the crowing episode of season 3 is indeed Call Of The Primitives. superb artwork, superb characters - especially the low level tollerance of the dinobots, with the predacons, and showing that trypticon isn't completely a mindless dullard, and the complete headstrong mentality of grimlock as he slides down the rockside after chasing tornedron.

i must admit that i wasnt too impressed with the primacron being the creator of unicron (certainly i can understand tornedron) and a matrix like object as its assistant. however i was impressed with the animation, and certainly the brawling throughout the film, and the storyline itself.

call of the primetives, is deffinately the crowning episode of season 3 - why couldnt they use the same animation house for the entire of g1? the japanese have had mecha/robot drawing down to a T and i think it would be absolutely made transformers even better animation wise than the muck we got.....

oh well.. no discerning fan can have it all.... can we?

I think that episode is stupid. How in the name of ass does a race of a bunch of monkeys create one of the most evil beings in the universe, brother of Primus, and the monster that consumed 22.0 percent of the known universe? I like to think of Unicron and Primus as beings created to help the spread of life, not experiments by monkeys.

fairy-nuff....thats your oppinion and you are entitled to it, but - and i stress but - the difference between comic cannon and animated tv cannon is vastly different.

in the original G1 animation, Unicron was just a giant bringer of destruction that was the ultimate in evil. in the G1 comic - Unicron was different, he was worshipped as a god by some, and only after Primus got shot in the head, did he begin to show up (furman-verse and has-verse work with the same characters, but take different deviations, because the has-verse didnt explain where unicron came from, he just was there, where as furman-verse allowed for more background, more scope than what a cell shade, and a room full of corporate execs could do).

i do rather gather, that, you are an intellectual and can understand where im coming from (pardon the sarcasm, but its who i am), but remember the Primacron was supposed to be a super genious, and the creature he created just fed on energy - like a virus, so the more it absorbed, the stronger it got.

if you take the animation of all the G1 season 3 episodes, and stack them together - CotP ranks at the top in terms of quality - yes it has its flaws, but then what animation series from the 80's into the 90's didn't?

but on the whole.. yeah Season 3 - sucked donkey-nards..big hairy donkey-nards

I grew up with Furman's stuff and still love it. That said, while I could never accept the cartoon as canon, there are some gems in there.

Season 3's Dark Awakening is one episode I'd love to see retconned into the Marvel Comics. If only it had CotP style animation.

I'll never understand how S3 gets so much flak when Season 2 is far, far worse.

S2 gave us crap like Kremzeek, Lord Chumley and A3/Alpha Trion, the worse cliche in TF history and robots with facial hair are naff unless they're called Scourge and Unicron.

S2 really disappointed me, apart from Masquerade and Cosmic Rust. Love the Stunticons in those.

Apart from the Goo arc, 5 Faces of Darkness was quite enjoyable and again should have gotten the CotP treatment.

I only saw a handful of S3 episodes as a kid so when I got the boxset 5 years ago, I was sceptical but actually enjoyed a lot of it.

I love Grimlock's New Brain and Money is Everything. The Technobots got some nice characterisation.

As a kid I didn't like the Quintessons as I liked the Primus origin and any focus on characters that weren't TF's held no interest to me. As an adult, I liked the third faction and also enjoyed the Universe Comics' reconcilliation of comic and cartoon origin.

The whole Primacron origin for Unicron was absolute slag though.

Rodimus will always be my Prime though, much better character than annoyingly perfect Optimus. He got some nice lines in S3.

"Basically, you have 2 choices, suffocate or smother!"

Enjoyed his impatience with Grimlock in New Brain too.

Minor quibble, but wasn't Call of the Primitives written and broadcast two full years before Furman started in on Unicron's and Primus' backstories?

Wait, I just remembered: That episode where Octane defected to the Autobots was cool. Also the episode where we saw Negative universe Ultra Magnus and Cyclonus. Then there's the time where Marissa Fairborn met that Smuggler, and when Rodimus Lost the Matrix and had to get it back. Also, who can forget all the episodes where we saw Starscream's ghost?

Okay not all of Season 3 was bad, but it wasn't the greatest either. Poor animation and some bad ideas hold it back from being better.

You know, I don't like season three overall, bar for a few episodes, but there is one thing I absolutely love about it.

Humanity.

After 22 years of contact with the Autobots, trading technology working with them, we're not left in the dust, so to speak. A frickin' huge space station in orbit, almost the entire Solar System colonized and going beyond. It was rather gratifying to see, actually.
Not caring about scale since 1984. Just like Hasbro.

Yeah, I agree with Sabrblade and Windsweeper. Their comments (aside from the Lord Chumley hate) are agreeable. I actually never saw the movie into well after S3 was in reruns so it was more of a piss off for me to see the movie.

I enjoyed the darker stories as mentioned and while the animation was absolutely brutal at times I wish to address this in terms of the OP's comments about how this was allowed to happen. AKOM was the same company that had brought us the S2 episodes of City of Steel, The Core and The Autobot Run. So, all things considered they came a long way.

The end of the season gets better and better, so the OP should give them a try. I usually watch FFoD and the last two DVDs. I agree that the Technobot episodes are great and there is some sweet animation to those as well. Grimlock's New Brain is brilliant and helps to restore some of what the Dinobots had taken from them in the movie and thereafter. Starscream's Ghost is great and I too, enjoy the third rival in the mix. I love the Quintesson Journal. Outback is great, but Blaster followed the annoying trend of having one the token black voice-actor speaking in rhyme. Blaster became as annoying as Wheelie. Though, many episodes finished early and hence needed 5-minute educational filler at the end, they at least clued in the new fans as to what was going on.

I enjoy CotP, but think the Unicron back story is weak and much of it is nonsensical. Primacron did not create the Trypticon or the Dinobots, nor would I consider Sky Lynx to be a "primative", but it's just to get all the animal toys, er, I mean, characters into the same plot. It's nice, but ill-conceived somewhat. Grimlock has rocket boosters that can get him to Primacron's lair faster than a being made entirely of energy? Hmmm...okay.

Finally, I will say that the best (only) good thing about CiCM was Soundwave getting not only some airtime, but almost a entire episode to spotlight him. It was great to see him and Galvatron as a team and you could almost see Megatron's personality coming through. Frank Welker saved that episode somewhat; it's just too bad that the animation was ass and the gay singing was part of the plot.

What is everyone's take on Galvatron being insane? Some like it and some don't. Anyone notice how S3 Transformers mirrored GI Joe? Serpentor was also unstable; Destro formed his own group for three main factions, etc.

Season 3 is what it is, I guess. My memories of it as a kid portrayed it as being much better than my adult DVD viewing confirms it as.
It birthed a number of things that would remain forever controversial within the fandom though, as we well know. The whole Unicron origin story, this strange misconception that Sue Blue is a good voice actor or that her 'different voices' aren't all the same voice, Rodimus in general, the clamor for Kups and Arcees and Springers and Galvatrons, etc. Call of the Primatives was a great episode, but my bitch with S3 is that I dont like a lot of the new characters. MAybe its because I had two seasons to get used to Optimus Prime and one season to get used to Rodimus Prime. Oh yeah, and lots of errors and animation goofs. And Arcee, just pointless.

If the 86 movie only existed to sell toys, how do we defend over 9000 movie verse Bumblebee toys? Does that not mean the live action movies exist to sell toys? Trying to claim the live movies as serious cinema doesn't work in an arguement that will by its nature default to shouting that they movies are only for entertainment, because the 86 movie was for entertainment as well, and you really can't stump it both ways. Besides, of course both 86 and 07/09 exist to sell toys: Hasbro is a company and the US is a capitalist country. Even if 86 was a brilliant plot to sell toys, 86 yielded one Rodimus Prime toy. How many Optimus Primes with slight variation in weapons or paint or even a different transformation has 07/09 produced?

I am confused why in season 1 and 2 hey never mentioned Unicron or even the Quintessons? and they all of a sudden appear in the movie, like i know they mentioned Alpha Trion in season 2 but in season 3 they dont nor is the female autobots: Moonraser, Elita-one, Firestar and Chromia.

The Transformers all forgot about the Quints.

And they had never heard of Unicron.

And Alpha Trion was indeed mentioned in season 3, as a matter of fact he even stared in an episode.

One other thought I had was that I liked the colour scenes for Magnus, Rodimus, Springer and Wreck-Gar. They worked well with Kup and Blurr. It seemed more like a comic book at times than a cartoon.
