Google phasing out support for IE6 ...

As a developer, I have grown to despise IE6 not necessarily because of its severe shortcomings, but because of the people who will not let this thing go. I am not anti-Internet Explorer (in fact, I go back and forth between Firefox 3.5, IE8 and Chrome on a regular basis). I am anti using browsers that are older than the cars that most of us drive. The browsers are free, the new ones are extremely stable, there is no reason why people should still be using a browser that is at least NINE years old.

Seibertron.com has not supported IE6 for about 6 months or so now. When you first visit the site in IE6, a warning message pops up encouraging you to upgrade. I support the "kill" IE6 campaigns.

The newer browsers support various elements and features of HTML5 which is extremely overdue in my book. HTML4 was released in December 1997. HTML5 has all sorts of new functionality and features that will make life much more efficient.

Nice to see Google hopping onboard to finally kill IE6 since Microsoft won't do it.

Google wrote:Dear Google Apps admin,

In order to continue to improve our products and deliver more sophisticated features and performance, we are harnessing some of the latest improvements in web browser technology. This includes faster JavaScript processing and new standards like HTML5. As a result, over the course of 2010, we will be phasing out support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as other older browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers.

We plan to begin phasing out support of these older browsers on the Google Docs suite and the Google Sites editor on March 1, 2010. After that point, certain functionality within these applications may have higher latency and may not work correctly in these older browsers. Later in 2010, we will start to phase out support for these browsers for Google Mail and Google Calendar.

Google Apps will continue to support Internet Explorer 7.0 and above, Firefox 3.0 and above, Google Chrome 4.0 and above, and Safari 3.0 and above.

Starting this week, users on these older browsers will see a message in Google Docs and the Google Sites editor explaining this change and asking them to upgrade their browser. We will also alert you again closer to March 1 to remind you of this change.

In 2009, the Google Apps team delivered more than 100 improvements to enhance your product experience. We are aiming to beat that in 2010 and continue to deliver the best and most innovative collaboration products for businesses.

Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,

The Google Apps team

I've been using Google Chrome for ages now. Especially with the K-ON Theme, I don't think I can ever go back to Firefox or IE ever.

Wow, people still use IE6, hehe. Hmm, I personally don't care that Google is phasing out IE6...it doesn't affect me and I don't care what people use for their web browser(s). I prefer to use Opera as I've used it on a wide variety of computers with no issues and it's a zippy browser.

I'm at work. I have to use IE6. I have to make sure my crap is usable in browsers that the Flintstones use. I want to be shot. But there's nothing I can do.

Yeah, IM/IT in all their wisdom like refuses to allow us to update to a current version of IE.....it drives me nuts.
