I'd say concept BB and Barricade.

Why?

$20(ish) well spent. Maybe not the best $20(ish) ever spent but it's a good way to blow $20. (ish)
You still maintain a "theme" with those two figures.
You can take awesome photos of those two in either mode.
Their names start with B.
They have their own Robot Heroes.
They're both expensive cars IRL.

If I was in prison and was given $20 and some change and a trip to a nicely stocked WM and was allowed to buy anything with the money I was given, I would get the above two figures. I would totally skip the hardware section and go straight to the toys. Not seriously, but I'm just saying.

With that said, hopefully you'll be able to make some decisions that won't make you feel like you'll make another toy line mistake.

IMO, the best of the line so fare are: Bonecrusher, Wreckage, and Dreadwing.

Acree, Concept Bumblebee, and Ironhide are all decent but have some annoying problems.

Barricade has a nifty idea(an evil police car), but has an irritating transformation and a dumb action feature.

Jazz is a decent toy, but, in robot mode, looks, frankly, like the Michelian(sp) Man with a terrible genetic defect that gave him abnormally small arms.

Eh, I don't know why some of you like Voyager megs better than leader. I respect it though.

That ice ... blah! He only takes about 4 seconds to transform. What's the fun in that? His feet suck, too. Unless I missed something, the only way to hold his feet open is to pinch them with his shin ice.

DorkimusPrime nailed it with Voyager prime. He would be stellar is it wasn't for that back pack thing he has going. He's quite movie accurate other than that.

That's because she got the 2nd worst figure of the line.

Why assume that an entire line sucks because of one toy? Furthermore, what are you doing comparing voyager figures to a deluxe anyway? Those are two different types of figure. And they weren't supposed to be like Classics.

I disliked Optimus Prime's wind plane in his Classics Voyager edition, but fell in love with it in short order.

It looks cool; he's just upgraded his body for the times a bit (helps with, you know, his disguise) and the darn thing can either be used as a:
  • Shield Generator (just suspend it behind him or above him in Robot mode)
  • AA gun (put the gun on backwards from how the directions say for better mobility and turning radius)
  • A freaking huge Sniper Cannon
That just doesn't get old.

You both assumed too much about what I was saying and didn't read my replies with folks who said the same thing you did in a softer manner, which actually got me to see their point. Understandable because there's a lot to read here, just don't jump on people.

I got a loving wife for that sort of thing ;)
No wonder we have four kids, right?

My 2 cents.

I've got Jazz, Bonecrusher, Dreadwing, Barricade, and Blackout. The only ones I like are Jazz and Dreadwing.

Jazz is a little on the stubby side but that just makes me love him more.

Barricade definately has a hair trigger on his arm and I always have a hell of a time getting him back into alt mode.

Blackout looks kinda cool but he's stuck in robot mode because one of the tabs on the side of the cockpit that locks him into either mode is crooked and I can't get him to lock into alt mode. His tail section is also too long in robot mode.

Bonecrusher is just plain ugly. He looks like a bridge troll instead of the big, hulking bruiser that he should be.

Dreadwing is just funny looking and that's why I love him.

But... but... but... he's a parts-former! Gun has nowhere to hide in car mode and you have to detach the spoiler thing to create his pseudo-shield! How can you! It's not even worthy of being a Roadbot!

as far as must-haves, i think you need to own either voyager or leader prime, hands down. now, i'm not a collector that just displays my toys, i play with them quite a bit. as far as breakages, i haven't had any yet, but those little yellow things on 08 bb's shoulders keep coming off. as far as assembly, blackout is the worst, he's all dangly in his alt mode. some of the toys don't feel too 'solid' but unless you give them to a toddler or something it shouldn't be an issue.
all in all, some of them could be better, but none of them really suck hardcore. sorry, i seem to have written an essay.

Thanks for all the responses, at the end of the day it looks like I will be picking up a few of these. I really enjoy having the leaders from every line.... So getting Prime almost forces me to get megatron :(

Shopping list:

Deluxe:
09 BB
Barricade
Jazz?
possibly Arcee

Leader:
Prime
Megs?

The stumpiness of all these character's save bumblebee is upsetting to me, barricades arms look like little sticks shooting out way too far and jazz is very blocky vs his slim appearance in the movie. Oh well, we will see. Def seems like 09 BB is the must have, and most likely prime as well.

Man, I'd get Arcee if I saw her just because she's hard to find, even though, in me and my kids' version of the fiction, Transformers don't have genders.

We'd have to make up something like, a Transformer, seeing human life (on TV, whatever), decided to be effeminate, or whoever authorized her construction did.

Trust me, Arcee's all woman. Nobody better than me would know.
