Repost from another site I post on. This movie was so bad, it wasn't worth re-typing the whole thing...
WARNING: SPOILERS CONTAINED WITHIN
AGAIN, WARNING: SPOILERS CONTAINED WITHIN...so please don't complain?
Well, I just finished watching it.
Wow.
Production values: BAD.
Quality: BAD.
Acting: BAD (but only a little below mediocre.)
Special Effects/Quickening (only one): BAD.
Story: UGH. (Worse than bad honestly.)
Well. So they finally found The Source. Yay for them, pure crap for us. They never did explain what it was! Just mystical, unlimited power when the planets align? Woo. A classic staple taken from many science fiction stories that cam before this...real original there folks.
Davis and Panzer, you two should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves. Though I must give you credit for not fighting to get this to the big screen...I mean you obviously knew from past experience that this would tank anyway....but wow...this one would've forced the two of you to pay every single ticket back, and then some.
The Prize? Apparently everything we knew about it was completely thrown out the window. 21 years worth of well defined mythos, shoved in a disposal and ground to bits. It was supposed to be mortality, the ability to have a child, and unlimited knowledge. (Wisdom and life together...that was The Prize. Considering the lives they lead, it sure was a prize.) But not now...oh no. Now, Duncan apparently gets to keep his immortality (from what I could tell), Methos gets to live (along with whoever is left immortal...) and Duncan gets to help make the ultimate, perfect immortal in the form of a child. That's The Prize? What about the normal life? The wisdom of those Quickenings he took?
This entire series used to be about fantasy, that was action packed. Now, it's a science fiction knockoff, with sparse bits of action, and such a dull presentation that it literally makes you wonder how people could hate Highlander II: The Quickening/2: The Renegade Version like they do. This movie actually made II/2 fit in the series better, and actually made it look somewhat respectable!
This was just awful. I'm sorry. It really was.
I went in with no real expectations, even with previous concerns, and I'll admit...when it began, I was excited. I was chomping at the bit to get right into it. The first thirty minutes go by and I was just kinda sittin' there lookin' at the clock.
It was weird (even for fantasy and Highlander), it was convoluted (in spots...I'm still not sure I have the ending pegged quite right, and I watched it twice!) and it was boring.
Nothing was really fleshed out (they really could've shown the actual footage of the car trip, not a little montage) so we couldn't really connect to the characters.
The villain (The Guardian) was ridiculous. Kurgan was over the top, but cool. General Katana was just a psycho for psycho's sake, but passable. Kane was just a terrible knock off of Kurgan, but Mario Van Peebles was cool enough to pull it off. (What little he could work with.) Even Jakob Kell was more of a threat than this Guardian buffoon. Oooh. He can run fast, he's indestructible, he can talk in weird voices (yay, drenched in sarcasm).
The soundtrack just made me angry. They butchered "Princes Of The Universe" for no good reason. They took a classic and ruined it. I'm not kidding, the damage is so bad, it'll be a while before I can even listen to the Queen original, because it'll just remind me how terrible this version really was.
The locations....UGLY. Note to self: Never go to Eastern Europe. Especially Lithuania. You'll thank yourself for it later.
Forget The Source...no. This is HINO...H.ighlander I.n N.ame O.nly
I'm still scratching my head over the baby issue. A perfect, immortal child? Seriously? Are you kidding me? >_<
And the crappiest part of it is...they left it open ended! It looks like we'll actually get the other movies that are part of this Source storyline!
ARGH! Lionsgate...Sci-Fi...back out while you can and never skip a beat.
This was just awful.
